More Sad News out of Colorado
The notorious Colorado snowpack has been off to a particularly rough start this season. Sadly this past week brought the state's avalanche fatality count to eight - half of the current seasonal total for the US.The recent accident occurred in Mineral County south of Telluride, and involved seven skiers: four of which were caught and buried and three of which were killed. The avalanche forecast was 'considerable' and the slide failed on a persistent weak layer. Read more about the accident from the Colorado Avalanche Information Centre, or check out this article posted in the Washington Post summarizing this accident as well as this season's US avalanche fatalities.
While the news is grim, hopefully there are learning opportunities in each of these stories and they can be shared in an effort to continually to raise awareness within the backcountry community world wide.
