      The Hoodie
The Hoodie is the sweater that started it all for PAKA, a company that was founded by Kris Cody in Peru that makes apparel from natural alpaca fibre. As PAKA states: “Our mission is to create natural, all-purpose clothing for people who love the outdoors. We’re doing this by innovating with alpaca fibre and other materials that are healthier for people and the planet so that consumers can connect to our natural world, make more conscious choices, and support the communities where our products come from.”

The Hoodie is made from start to finish in Peru with the alpaca fibre sourced from the outskirts of Puno, then dyed in the mountains of Arequipa, and hand-signed by the female artisan who wove it in Cusco. Alpaca fibre is used because it is super soft next to your skin, not unlike cashmere and does not have a prickly feel like some other natural fibres. It is hypoallergenic and free of lanolin, fire resistant and water resistant with a low absorption rate so it is ideal for high-energy activities since it naturally wicks water away from the skin. It also dries quickly and is naturally breathable, warm, soft and unusually comfortable.

Alpaca fibres are healthier for people and the planet and allow consumers to connect to our natural world by supporting the communities where the products come from—ultimately making more conscious choices is good for everyone.

The Hoodie is made from 65% Royal Alpaca Fibre which is super soft and comfortable, naturally antimicrobial and odour-resistant and 35% recycled nylon is added to increase durability.

The hoody is ideal for cold spring and fall days or as a mid-layer in winter. Around town, on the trail or the skin track. The Hoodie is a no-nonsense and versatile layer that makes you feel comfortable wearing it and knowing that you are supporting 100+ women in Peru.

Spring means ski traverse season and that means long days in warmer weather and this is where the new Khroma Ascendor Softshell Pants from Rab excel. Traditional waterproof/breathable ski pants are great for skiing at the resort, particularly when it is cold and blustery outside, but when you need to crush vertical and regulate your temperature more effectively you want a softshell ski touring pant like the Kroma Ascendors. They are made from midweight, weather-resistant Matrix softshell fabric that is super stretchy and breathable—two qualities you really want for backcountry skiing. Rab packed the Khroma Ascendor Softshell Pants with heaps of features you want and none that you don’t. There are reinforced kick patches on the inside lower legs to resist scrapes from sharp ski edges or crampons. There are several useful YKK zippered pockets to be found on the Khroma Ascendor Softshell Pants including two hand pockets, a back pocket and a thigh pocket for your transceiver—complete with a transceiver clip. Arcade Atlas Belt
Already being a big fan of Arcade Belts due to their low-profile design which works really well under a lot of layers or a backpack hip belt, I was interested to check out their Atlas Belt with their patented A2 buckle. This new buckle design is easier to use and holds tension securely yet is easier to adjust when needed to dial in an exact fit. Like all of Arcade’s buckles, the A2 conforms to your body which means you won’t know it’s there and it won’t rub you the wrong way when you have a pack or harness on.

Arcade uses a super stretchy fabric in all their belts which are made up of 85% post-consumer recycled REPREVE polyester and 15% rubber. This fabric is made from repurposed post-consumer plastic bottles that would have otherwise ended up in landfills and instead give them a second life. Not only does this fabric make less of an impact on the environment, but it is also really durable and performs well over time.

If you are an adventurous person then check out Arcade’s line of Performance Stretch Belts, you can thank us later.

BEST NEW HIKING/CAMPING GEAR FOR SUMMER 2024
Nemo Moonlite Elite Reclining Backpacking Chair
Nemo has taken the backpacking chair to new heights with features, build quality and lightweight that other brands can’t match. Their new Moonlite Elite Reclining Backpacking Chair wights just 1lb 6oz / 617g so there is no reason to not take it on your next adventure, whether it be hiking or car camping. The most unique feature is the chair’s reclining option which is made possible with a brand-new suspension system that replaces the supportive webbing for an HTP and Dyneema cord that is super thin yet incredibly strong. This system allows you to select an upright sitting position or a fully reclined option and everything in between. Even though the Moonlite Elite Reclining Backpacking Chair is super light it provides stable support and comfort thanks to the forged aluminum hubs and molded corner mounts. The chair’s seat is made from a custom-engineered, post-consumer recycled mesh that blends polyester and TPU fibres for a seamless design that comfortably cradles the body.

Nemo ensured that durability was not sacrificed in the name of weight savings and termed this process as “skeletonizing”. By removing every ounce of unnecessary material and complex design problem-solving and thorough engineering analysis, Nemo was able to create a true backpacking chair that’s unmatched.

The other innovative design feature that Nemo included with the Moonlite Elite Reclining Backpacking Chair is the carrying case which uses a tool roll–style storage option and when not in use, the case doubles as an optional platform that adds stability on sandy loose surfaces. Simply brilliant!

Sea to Summit Ascent Down Sleeping Bag
Sea to Summit has redesigned their men’s and women’s Ascent Down Sleeping Bags for Spring 2024 and they’ve added a few new features that make it one of the most versatile and functional 3 season sleeping bags on the market. The Ascent’s warmth comes from the bag’s RDS-certified 750+ fillpower goose down which uses a non-PFC Ultra-Dry Down treatment to ensure the down stays drier in damp conditions. This is wrapped up in a lightweight 20D recycled nylon shell with a non-PFC Durable Water Repellant (DWR) finish to ensure wind and water don’t penetrate the outer fabric. On the inside of the Ascent Sleeping Bag, you’ll find the same super soft and comfortable 20D recycled nylon. Sea To Summit uses a box baffle design that keeps more of the warmth within the bag since the stitching is not sewn through. This process takes considerably more effort to produce but the added warmth and comfort are immediately noticeable. On the lower half of the bag, the baffles run vertically up and down to minimize migration of the down and maximize the warmth transfer down your body while the upper baffles are a more traditional horizontal orientation to promote heat distribution across your torso.

Sea To Summit’s unique Free-Flow Zip System means that you have several ways to stay comfortable depending on your sleeping preference and body temperature. You can open up the side zipper to vent out excess heat or use both side zippers to increase ventilation and airflow to prevent overheating. You can even unzip the foot box zipper to release heat from that area as well. If you prefer you can unzip the main zipper fully to use the Ascent Sleeping Bag as a quilt or simply snap the top of the side zippers and then open up the zippers enough to poke your arms out and use the foot box zipper to poke your feet out and you can relax in your tent staying warm and comfortable while still having all the mobility you need. The Free-Flow Zip System also allows you to seamlessly couple together two Ascent Sleeping Bags to maximize interior space, heat sharing and comfort. All of the zippers have interior baffles to prevent heat loss and the two side zippers used anti-snag zipper plows to ensure that you will never snag the fabric when closing the zippers. Brilliant!

This is the one three-season bag you’ll ever need no matter the conditions or your adventure, full of innovative design features and an impressive warmth-to-weight ratio making this our sleeping bag of choice.

      Solarcore Aerogel
Developed by Samuel Stephens Kistler over 80 years ago, Aerogel was not used commercially until NASA improved the substance and found a practical application for it when they realized that it could protect astronauts from the extreme temperatures of space.

Aerogel is a very ultra-lightweight synthetic material that is porous and derived from a gel. By replacing the liquid component with a gas the resulting structure is a solid with extremely low density and low thermal conductivity which makes it an excellent insulator. It is often referred to as "frozen smoke" because of its translucent nature and the way it scatters light. Made primarily from silica (silicon dioxide, the primary component of sand), Aerogel is one of the lightest solid materials in the world.

Solarcore Aerogel is found in the Merrell Coldpack 3 Thermo Tall Zip Waterproof Boots because of its incredibly low thermal conductivity even when compressed such as in the case of footbeds. Solarcore offers the promise of ‘More Warmth. Less Bulk’ which helps make the Merrell Coldpack 3 Thermo Tall Zip Waterproof Boots not only incredibly warm but also won’t add any unnecessary weight or bulk. Merrell has incorporated Solarcore Aerogel into the insoles of their Coldpack 3 Thermo Tall Zip Waterproof Boots for superior warmth underfoot and ultra-thin structure while also providing the flexibility needed in a winter boot. If you suffer from cold feet or just want the most advanced insulation in your winter boots then look for Solarcore Aerogel in footwear such as the Merrell Coldpack 3 Thermo Tall Zip Waterproof Boots. If you are a hydration system user then there is full integration for this option as well. On the hip belt, you’ll find one gear loop for mountaineering and climbing carabiners and a zippered pocket for easy access to smaller items.

Ortovox of course takes sustainability seriously and so the two main outer materials are made of 100% and 50% recycled polyamide. Gregory Alpaca Gear Box 45L
For the ultimate in gear storage and protection, the Alpaca Gear Box can’t be beaten. The see-through lid allows you to see the contents of the Alpaca Gear Box without having to open it which is super handy if you have multiple boxes. The lid is made from clear polycarbonate so it can withstand hard impacts and the lid’s latch system uses Gregory’s FlipFlp Dual Access Hinge design which means that you can open the lid from either side or if you want to remove it all together for even easier access. Shokz OpenRun Pro Mini
Most wireless earbuds fit in your ears and cut off exterior noise which can be a problem in urban environments or while running. This is where the Shokz Open Run Pro Mini headphones excel since they are Open-Ear headphones which use Bone Conduction Technology. That’s right, these wireless sports headphones allow for total awareness of your surroundings in a bud-free design that provides comfortable listening. Most sound is transmitted through the air to our eardrums, however, bone-conduction headphones transmit sound through vibrations on the bones of the head and jaw. The sounds from these headphones bypass the eardrum and relay sound directly to the inner ear so you can still hear your surroundings.

The OpenRun Pro Mini is the lightest headphone to date in the Shokz lineup and is engineered with outstanding sound, a long-lasting battery, and a Quick Charge capability. This new “Mini” version uses a 0.83-inch shorter band than their standard size, making it ideal for smaller head sizes and for those who prefer a more snug fit. Their IP67 rating makes them completely sweat and waterproof for intense workouts and harsh weather and their 8-hour Battery Life has a 10-minute Quick Charge for up to 1.5 hours of battery life. Controls include play, skip, pause, and back-a-track, you can enjoy music, calls, audiobooks, and podcasts all day long. Powered by patented 8th-generation bone conduction, Bluetooth 5.1, and PremiumPitch™ 2.0+, OpenRun delivers clear sound, powerful volume, and rich bass.

      Rab Muon 40 Backpack
If you want to move faster then you have to go lighter and that’s the principle behind Rab’s new Muon 40 Backpack. This is Rab’s foray into ultralight packs it uses a streamlined sturdy design to provide all the features you can think of, all without adding additional weight. At 40L the Muon is ideal as an ultralight multi-day trekking pack but if you need more room then consider the 50L version of the Muon. Both are available in men’s and women’s versions. The women’s pack is built with narrower dimensions which makes them ideal for women with smaller bodies.

At just 0.895kg / 1lb 16oz, the Muon 40 is truly lightweight thanks mostly in part to the use of the Spectra Ripstop fabric. This durable and lightweight fabric is also UV-resistant and built to take some abuse despite its light weight. The Spectra fibres, realtime to their weight are 15 times stronger than steel and are woven with Cordura nylon to form a rip-stop grip that easily withstand day-to-day abuse.

Despite its diminutive weight, the Muon 40 Backpack can comfortably shoulder heavy loads thanks to its close-fitting TRI-FLEX™ carry system which features a wraparound harness, shaped lumbar pad, and supportive hip belt. TO adjust the overall fit and stability you can adjust the Muon 40 suspension by using the forward pull, on the hip belt and snugging up the built-in ultralight compression straps. The lower compression straps also double as a way to affix a sleeping mat.

The Muon 40 Backpack has a roll top design which allows for easy access to internal items and can compress and expand as your requirements warrant. Rab Veil 12L Lightweight Running Vest
Rab’s newest lightweight running vest, the ‘Veil’ comes in lightweight 6L and 12L sizes and is designed for longer distance runs. The Veil is built around a Mono Mesh Chassis which has been designed to contour to your body, provide support for the gear you are carrying and reduce bounce while running on variable terrain. The sternum fit system provides a lightweight and customizable fit with three sizes to choose from so you will always get a perfect fit. The highly breathable fabric is 50% lighter and retains 70% less moisture than other options on the market. It has a large U-shaped zipped compartment on the back to store extra layers with a smaller internal zippered pocket for valuable and smaller items. There are two secure zippered pockets with ultralight zip pulls on the front in addition to two medium-sized mesh stuff pockets. There are two more mesh stuff pockets on the back along with a rear bungee that can be used to stow wet gear or help compress the load. The lower compression straps are used to stow two trekking Z-poles across your lower back or use the bungees on the front to stow one trekking pole on each side vertically when not needed. The Veil 12 offers plenty of on-the-go hydration options as well with two 500ml soft flasks (included) incorporated into the front pockets as well as the ability to carry a 2L water bladder in the back.

The Veil 12 has a large volume so it can carry a lot of water, snacks and layers that you’ll need on ultra-marathons and long-distance mountain runs. Thanks to its intuitive design and lightweight materials, the Veil is worn rather than carried with zero bounce and everything you need at your fingertips.
