Helly Hansen LIFA Merino Lightweight Crew LS
Helly Hansen redefined the base layer with their LIFA fabric and now they’ve made it even better with their LIFA Merino Lightweight Crew Long Sleeve. They’ve combined their LIFA Stay Warm Technology fabric on the interior of this Lightweight Crew Long Sleeve next to skin and 100% merino wool on the exterior—hence the shirt’s name. This creates a unique and lightweight 2-in-1 base layer that keeps you warm, moves moisture away from your skin and won’t get that funky smell after just one wear. It also uses flatlock seams so there are no hot spots under your pack straps or harness and since the merino wool is away from your skin it isn’t itchy. Both fabrics provide such unique properties it only makes sense to leverage their individual benefits and combine them into one unique fabric. Added to the 70% Merino Wool is 30% Polypropylene which provides added durability without taking away any insulating properties or increasing weight. The LIFA Merino Lightweight Crew Long Sleeve is an ideal layer for adventures where you need to layer up or you just want a single layer during shoulder season when the temperatures fluctuate more than the weather does.

        Black Diamond Highline Stretch Shell
Black Diamond is pushing the sustainability of their apparel this spring with the release of their new Highline Stretch Shell which is a premium 3-layer mountain/alpine shell. It is of course waterproof and breathable thanks to the BD.dry fabric but the real story is in the use of a PFC-free water-repellent finish. Made by Green Theme International (GTT), this revolutionary breathable water protection technology is an environmentally friendly solution that’s superior in performance to other DWR’s. It is permanently hyper-fused to the individual fabric fibres, and therefore there’s no need to ever refresh the jacket with an additional spray or wash-in finish.

The HighLine Stretch Shell is a fully-featured lightweight/packable all-weather jacket, it comes with a chest and two hand pockets, pit zips for ventilation, an adjustable climbing helmet-compatible hood, and YKK Aquaguard Zippers. With all these features in such a light and packable jacket, there’s no reason to ever leave it behind.

        Arc’teryx ATOM SL Anorak
Anoraks are making a comeback these days and Arc’teryx is getting in on the action with their new for Spring 2021 ATOM SL Anorak. This pull over the head style of jacket has a longer front zip for easy on/off and the ability to quickly vent excess heat during high-output activities. The Atom SL has been designed as a minimalist mid-layer for mild Spring and Fall conditions where you need a little protection from the wind and cold. You’ll find a light layer of synthetic Coreloft insulation strategically placed in the torso and back with fleece side panels for an additional stretch under the arms. The Tyono 20 fabric provides a good amount of breathability while still buffeting the wind and a DWR finish on the fabric will repel moisture. To increase weather protection there is an uninsulated hood and when not needed the ATOM SL Anorack stores away into its own chest pocket. In our testing the Coreloft insulation was just enough but not too much and this proved to be a very efficient, light, and compressible layer for those uncertain weather days in spring, fall and early summer.

        Marmot WarmCube Novus Hoody
Marmot’s WarmCube insulation technology debuted last year and can now be found in their mainstay cold-weather layer—the Novus Hoody. WarmCube uses a 3D construction that prevents the PrimaLoft Black insulation (which is made with 60% recycled material) from being displaced and the innovative channel design traps in heat for maximum warmth. The WarmCube Novus Hoody is ideal for chilly crag days, shoulder-season mountain adventures and of course resort and backcountry skiing in winter. This jacket features articulated elbows for unrestricted mobility, a fixed hood for warmth, zippered hand pockets; interior chest pocket, and an adjustable hem to keep the cold out. It’s lightweight, breathable, wind-resistant, and even if the PrimaLoft insulation gets wet it’ll still keep you warm. The innovative 3D cube structure of WarmCube insulation means you’ll stay warmer than with traditional flat insulation and since the Novus Hoody uses smaller cubes which are only found on the inside back panel it means that this is an ideal outer layer for active pursuits or a mid-layer on those colder days.

        GORE-TEX PRO
Since 1958, Gore has created fabrics and technologies to solve problems in the most demanding environments, from outer space to the world’s highest peaks to the inner workings of the human body. In 2007 Gore launched their innovative GORE-TEX PRO technology and new for this year they have added three new variations of this waterproof breathable fabric technology which will allow manufacturers to more effectively build apparel targeting different types of performance for different end uses.

From day one GORE-TEX PRO has always been very rugged and durable, providing long-lasting protection in the most extreme conditions while still being totally windproof. This means that the fabric stops all wind, so you stay warmer while at the same time providing the highest level of breathability to ensure you overheat less during intense activity, thus staying warmer when you stop to rest. Of course GORE-TEX PRO comes with the “Guaranteed to Keep You Dry” promise that Gore-Tex is famous for.

The three new GORE-TEX PRO technologies are GORE-TEX PRO most rugged technology, GORE-TEX PRO stretch technology and GORE-TEX PRO most breathable technology.

GORE-TEX PRO most rugged technology  This new GORE-TEX PRO fabric is the most rugged, GORE-TEX fabric ever made in the Mountain Sports category. The extreme level of ruggedness is achieved via a 3-layer system using a new membrane technology, very rugged face textiles and the robust MicroGrid solution-dyed backer. It is well-suited to high-wear situations and people who want the longest possible garment life.
GORE-TEX PRO stretch technology  Using an entirely new approach to achieving stretch in a waterproof-breathable fabric, this technology offers a high level of durability that a consumer expects from a GORE-TEX PRO laminate in combination with up to 20 percent stretch for improved comfort when moving.

GORE-TEX PRO most breathable technology  For higher exertion situations, this very rugged technology provides extreme breathability, minimizing moisture build-up and giving more comfort in more conditions. It uses lighter fabrics and comes with and the new solution-dyed version of the Micro Grid backer, all while meeting the Guaranteed to Keep You Dry promise.

On the environmental front, these new GORE-TEX PRO technologies come with recycled and solution-dyed textiles that reduce water usage and CO2 emissions, creating a lower environmental footprint.

Apparel manufactures can now use a combination of any or all three of these new GORE-TEX PRO technologies in a single garment and body map them to provide the best attributes of each specific GORE-TEX PRO fabric to that location of the garment depending on the desired functionality. These new GORE-TEX PRO options are available now and can be found in apparel from Arc’teryx, Mountain Hardwear, Patagonia, Mammut, Norröna, Mountain Equipment and Montbell, to name a few.

        Mammut Sapuen SO Hooded Jacket
Mammut’s new for spring 2021 Sapuen SO Hooded Jacket is more than your average softshell since it has a waterproof and breathability rating of 10k. This means that in a water column test it has a hydrostatic head of 10,000 mm while still having a vapour permeability rating of 10,000 g/m2/24h. In laymen's terms, this means it is more waterproof than most soft shells that claim to be simply water-resistant and yet it’s still breathable! This makes the Sapuen SO Hooded Jacket ideal for active pursuits in colder weather such as ski touring, hiking, biking and trail running since sweat can easily be transported to the outside of the fabric where it can evaporate.

The outer fabric is very robust and durable while the back of the Sapuen SO has wool blended into the fabric for more comfort and warmth. The entire jacket has a serious amount of 4-way stretch for maximum freedom of movement and features a chest pocket as well as two side pockets, and an adjustable hood. The Sapuen SO Hooded Jacket is also PFC-free, contains Fair Wear certified fabrics and the fabric is certified as Bluesign approved.

        Rab Downpour Eco Jacket
Rab’s new Downpour Eco Jacket is waterproof, breathable and packable but that’s not what makes it so special. Because it uses a recycled 2.5-layer Pertex Revolve fabric with a fluorocarbon-free DWR treatment it is a very eco-conscious jacket. In fact, it is Rab’s first-ever mono-polymer waterproof jacket and by using a polyester outer and membrane it is not only 100% recycled but it also has the future potential to be fully recycled at the end of its life cycle. Of course, it has a waterproof rating of 20,000 HH with an MVTR breathability rating of 20,000g. Some of the notable features include a pair of zipped handwarmer pockets, an integrated stuff sack for easy carry, adjustable hem and cuffs, plus a two-way adjustable hood with polymer peak. 5.11 Tactical Pants
5.11 Tactical (not to be confused with Five Ten Shoes) got its start in the public safety and first responder community in 1992 when the FBI training academy started using its original 5.11 pant. They expanded from there to create a more extensive line of law enforcement apparel in 2003. They’ve now expanded into the outdoor and fitness markets with products such as the 5.11 Ridge Pants and 5.11 Decoy Pants that we’ll look at closer here.

        5.11 Ridge Pants
Given 5.11’s origins, it’s no wonder that they’ve incorporated a few SERC (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) features into their Ridge Pants. Case in point, the hidden cuff key pocket, hidden thigh pockets and an IWB flex cuff tunnel (what that is for, you got me?). Other features include articulated knees for better range of motion and the comfort waistband for improved fit and comfort.

5.11 Decoy Convertible Pants UPF 50+
5.11’s Decoy Convertible Pants provide the option to convert the pants into shorts (as the name suggests) and the fabric is super lightweight and ideal for warmer climates even in the pant form. They provide a 50+ UPF rating and have 8 pockets in total so there is never a shortage of storage options. Articulated knees and a comfortable waistband ensure an ideal fit and range of motion no matter the activity.

Smartwool Men's Merino Sport 150 Tee
By now we all know that merino wool has natural odour resistance and antimicrobial properties along with moisture management and temperature regulation but the one weak point of merino wool is that it wears easily and is not as durable as one may like. This is why Smartwool used a blend of 56% Merino Wool and 44% Polyester to give their new Men's Merino Sport 150 Tee the ruggedness, longevity and quick dry time of polyester. The Merino Sport 150 Tee is designed to help keep you comfortable while you’re active with specialized seam construction that helps to eliminate chafing while wearing a pack.

Smartwool also has a new range of merino wool socks and underwear for him and her so stock up this spring and ensure you are cool and comfortable no matter what you have planned.

        Oboz Women’s Arete Low Waterproof
Oboz new Arete Shoes are a lightweight and waterproof trial shoe designed to keep you comfortable and take you far. The woven mesh construction uses a no-sew upper that allows your feet to breath while the women’s-specific midsole provides the support you need. Oboz BDry Waterproof technology keeps your feet dry on muddy trails while the new A3 Chassis supports and stabilizes your foot on variable terrain thanks to the integrated shank that mitigates over-flexion and protects your feet from stone bruising. In addition to this, independent TPU stabilizers provide torsional flex and allow for natural articulation while the single density EVA throughout provides cushioning and comfort. On the underside the Arete’s use Tempest Outsole which not only reduces weight but features a multi-directional tread, perimeter lugs for traction, and active flex grooves for freedom of movement. Inside the Arete Shoes you’ll find Oboz proprietary O FIT Insole which is molded to match the specific shape and construction of each shoe so that it delivers performance and comfort that’s unmatched.
Oboz makes the Arete in a Men’s and Women’s, Low and Mid version in both waterproof and non-waterproof models. However, if you are looking for a more versatile, everyday shoe which is designed for high performance trail use and around-town all-day comfort then you may want to check out the Oboz Sypes Low which is priced at $169.95CAN / $135US and if you want the waterproof version they make that too.
Not only did we think the Arete Low Waterproof Shoes were worth of our Best Summer Gear selection but Outside Magazine also named these shoes “Best Low Hiker”. It must have something to do with their superior stability, uncompromising fit, and trail performance.
