Discounted Sourdough Traverse Hiking Trip
The Sourdough Traverse is a 4-night, 5-day glamping style hiking adventure in the Kokanee Range in the West Kootenay’s of British Columbia. The route was created by Carlyle Lodge owner Brian ‘The Bomber’ Cross and is primarily an off-trail ridge route from Sandon to Carlyle Lodge.
With 3 nights of camping at fully stocked campsites along the way and the last night at Carlyle Lodge, all you need to hike with is your sleeping bag and day pack, the rest is taken care of by your guides and food/gear caches at each location. There are tents, foamies, camp supplies, food/drinks and even latrine barrel facilities at each of the three campsites which are situated in the high alpine. Two of the camps are on the edge of alpine tarns so swimming is an optional, along the route you will have excellent mountain views, varied hiking terrain and some of the most beautifully pristine lakeside camping.
Day one is all about gaining elevation from Sandon and will cover 11km and 1,100m of gain to arrive at ‘Fire Camp’. Day two is a more leisurely ridge walk with only 6km of hiking and 650m of elevation to arrive at Starlight Basin Camp. Day three will cover 7.5km and 1,000m of gain to Sunrise Camp where a refreshing alpine swim awaits to cool off. From Sunrise Camp it is only 3.5km and a mere 300m of elevation gain to Carlyle Lodge where a comfortable stay awaits you. There are options for day hikes from Carlyle Lodge to the summit of Mount Carlyle, Misty Mountain, and Mount Con Mine or rambling through Sunnyside Basin located just out the front door of the lodge. From the lodge, it is an easy 6.5km hike (with a 650m loss in elevation) to the trailhead and a short drive to Sandon where the trip started.
