    Hornby Organic Energy Bars

Hornby Organic’s mission is to make organic energy bars that are affordable and friendly to the planet. Over the years founder Irah and his girlfriend have taken Hornby Organics from a small garage on Hornby Island to a much larger production facility in Comox on Vancouver Island and in the process became Canada’s first Canadian Organic Certified energy bar. As they’ve grown, their commitment to people and planet before profit has never waivered.

As delicious as they are nutritious, Hornby Organic Energy Bars are also made in Canada, eh.

    Verdict:

Over the years we’ve had the opportunity to review such energy bars as Four Points Energy Bars, Prima Energy Bars and Health Warrior Chia Bars and in a crowded bar market, it’s tough to stand out. We put Hornby Organics to the test to see how they stack up to the competition.

One of the first things that is noticeable with each bar is the texture. There is a waxy, shiny, outer layer on each bar and if you are familiar with the original Power Bar you’ll be familiar with what I am talking about. At first, I have to admit this was a little off-putting but once I took my first bite my fears of having to try to ingest a dry, flavourless bar were put to rest. Each bar has a unique, yet subtle flavour which is appreciated. Sometimes energy bars can have an overpowering taste but Hornby Organics has dialled in the ingredients to make a bar that is easy to eat, especially on the go.

In terms of actual energy these bars provide, I sampled each flavour over the course of mountain bike rides of varying lengths on hot, dry days. I’m not normally a big eater on longer rides but I do like to take in calories to keep me going and Hornby Organic bars definitely provide lasting energy without making you feel full. Overall they do what they are supposed to while tasting good. I was able to eat half a bar before a two-hour ride and my energy level never dipped. On longer rides, I tried half a bar pre-ride and then half a bar midway through and again my energy levels were sustained.

Overall I’d rate Hornby Organics as one of the better bars I’ve tried. They use quality organic ingredients to ensure they are certified organic in addition to being gluten Free and tasting great. Did I also mention that they are made right here in BC!

    PROS:

    • Great taste.
    • Certified Organic, certified gluten free, dairy and soy free.
    • Bars are a good size for the price.

    CONS:

    • Some found the texture a little waxy in nature.
    • Packaging is non recyclable.
