The best ski transportation solution for the car?

We are two students who love skiing. At the moment we are doing a project regarding transportation of ski equipment outside a car. We would love to hear from all you skiing enthusiasts out there what you wish for in the ultimate ski transport solution! What are your needs? Something that is missing, annoying or that you appreciate with todays products? Any special needs for backcountry skis?

All opinions and thoughts are welcome!

Ski boxes pretty much take care of the needs of protecting skis but they are a pain to load and unload up on the roof and are expensive. What school/course is this project for?

I don’t use the typical ski roof rack attachments because they leave the bindings exposed to the elements and I feel like all the sand and grit would be hard on the moving parts of AT/tele bindings.  Instead I put the skis inside the car, where they sit at about neck level and threaten us with decapitation in the event of a minor fender bender. For longer trips I use the racks but put skis in ski bags, which works but kinda of pain in the butt and most friends don’t have ski bags.  So I will save my pennies for one of those sweet but pricey ski boxes.

I'd like to see more options available to carry skis behind the vehicle, like those removable mountian bike racks that fit on most trunks. I feel like if the skis are carried behind the vehicle they may be a little less exposed to the elements, except for maybe debris flying up from under your rear wheels.  As for now I carry the gear inside my truck (cherokee) which leaves room for 4 people including driver. Anyways good luck with the project.
