        Gecko Climbing Skins - REVIEW

Gecko-climbing-skinsThe adhesive on the Geckos is a rubbery compound that works by sticking to smooth, flat surfaces only. The skin does adhere to itself, though the effort required to pull your the two sticky interfaces apart is far easier than any type of traditional glue skin. The make up of this adhesive has not been advertised, but the words 'molecular fusion' have been floating around various online discussions. The closest description I think of is the patch of rubbery glue that magazine publishers use to stick Cds and booklets onto the front of their publications. When you peel that yellow strip off the magazine it leaves no residue, you can screw it up into a ball and then unfurl it again. It sticks to flat things and doesn't get contaminated with hair, dust and other inconveniences, such as snow.

Great review! One note on the tail clip - you can tension it easily by putting it on the ski and at first tightening the cam gently (as much as it will easily tighten - don't ream on it!), then taking it off and notching up the cam about a millimeter or two, then you'll notice it "snaps" back on the tail of the ski nice and snug so it won't slide off either side. Unless you have really rounded twin tips (the clip is fine with pin tails and most twin tips too). I recommend trying the tail clip on your skis using a shop's demo plate (sample skin).

        Cheers!

Spent the past four days in Rogers Pass using a new set of the Geckos.  I cut them for a narrower ski than I was using (6mm underfoot difference), but still considered them to work fine.  Adhesion (ski/skin) was as if I was still using my BD Ascensions, glide was significantly better, snow/skin traction was solid in the the relatively mild temps we experienced.

I've run all my skins without tailclips for years and chose the same approach with the Geckos.  Four days is a small sample set to work from, but there was no indication that it was going to be a problem to run these clipless either.

Evidence of a little more wear than I would have expected from crossing over a couple tree branches, but I'd agree with the initial review 4.5/5.

Got mine out of Europe for ~$180CDN to my door.

        Feb. 25 Update

A few K Country days followed by another 7 days of use in Selkirk powder.

Wear concerns are increasing as the edges are fraying more than expected.  So far I haven't experienced the 'glue' sticking to the ski issue that the next poster (joelf) refers to – despite the fact that I've executed the cardinal sin of leaving my skins on the skis for days between uses.  A couple nasty uptracks resulted in the last 15cms or so flopping around (I'm still running without tail attachments), but it never got any worse over the course of the next hour of climbing on either occasion.

My wife is on a set too – she's loving the fact that it's not a wrestling match for her each time she goes to mount them on her skis, but more surprising to me was the fact that she commented on how comparitively (again versus BD Ascensions) lightweight they are – this from someone who'd rather suffer with equipment shortcomings than spend ANY money on new alternatives!

My rating remains the same 4.5/5.

        January 2013 Update

Rating has plummetted courtesy of the adhesive material slowly abandoning the skin and sticking to the ski - the result is that after ~75 days of use I've abandoned them and gone back to a different brand.  Hope that it's an isolated case, but I'm not holding my breath.

We'll see how/if the warranty service provides any satisfaction.

        Updated rating 1/5.

Here's my review after a half season of use (about 40 days).

About the glide/grip. When I compare to my previous skins, some BD pure mohair, it's about the same which does the job great. The geckos don't fray whereas the BDs did a little bit.

The tip attachment works great and the tail attachment is fine too. A little less bulky than the BD tail clip.

Half of one skin came off in the snow once. The snow did stick to it. My friend had a plastic scraper which I used to get the snow off delicately and the glue worked fine after that.

The skins are really easy to pull apart in any temperature, and that's what I like the most about these.

My main worry is how well the glue is bonded to the skin. When I bought the skins I was told to be very careful about the glue, and I have been. Some glue stays on the skis on warm days (and then comes right off after a few turns). I have a few patches of glue that are gone and my skins look a few years old because of that (even though they are only 2 months old). But so far it hasn't been a problem and they still work great.

Bottom line: I have mixed feelings about these because of the longevity. After 2 months, I am satisfied. If I can get a glue renew for next season, I'll probably do that.

Pros: Mohair is great, easy to pull apart at any temp.

Cons: Glue isn't well bonded to skin, overpriced.

BTW, I ski in the Roger's Pass area.

        Hope this helps, Joel.

Hey Joel, when you refer to "glue" you mean the skin backing that is the rubbery material? I thought the Geckos were a glueless skin? was not sure the material was treated with anything  - I thought it was just a new wacky rubber compound.

        Good insight into longer use.

I have been skiing on the new Gecko skins for a solid week now touring 5000' plus a day for 7 days and the skins grip really well and stick to the ski in cold and warm weather. Overall a great product that works as stated - my only beef is with the tail clip as was mentioned in the review, it is cheap and falls of consistently, for next season it would be good to see Gecko refine the tail clip system and then they have a true winner!

After another 30 days or so of use...

Even if the glue balls up and comes off, whatever is left still sticks very well to the skis. The glue hasn't got dirty yet so I haven't had to do a wash so far. Overall, I'd say I'm happy with these.

Skifreak: These are definitely a glue skin. It's just a different style of glue than the G3s or BDs.

        Cheers, Joel.

Well I had last years model Gecko for my slpit board. (2013)  Didn't even last 5 uses.  Adhesive wore off the curved front edge on the split with in a couple of uses and just kept pealing back, causing the split to ride off to the side while trying to skin.  Cut that back at the store but it continued to happen.  Then tail strap began to wear through.  Less than 10 uses and was completely useless!  Then the issue witht the replacement not available.  (Sudden death of NA Distributer and other issues as told by my local seller.  Very sorry to hear of that and I realize that would be completely out of people's hands.  )  6 months later I am told the new ones "are on the way."  Will be interested to see how these hold up.  Not excited about these.  Like the less weight, as split skins can be big and heavy.  Liked the glide.  To bad they didn't stick.  And yes temperature seemed to make a differance.  Not sure what was worse, wet warm or cold and dry.
