      Brooks-Range Backcountry Multi-Tool - REVIEW

Brooks-Range Backcountry Multi-ToolBrooks-Range has just released their new Backcountry Multi-Tool to answer the needs of many who have been looking for that all in one solution. There are many multi-tools on the market but the geniuses at Brooks-range decided to make one specifically for the backcountry skiing crowd so that we could fix anything on a pair of Fritschi or Dynafit bindings - well done! The Multi-Tool is made from stainless steel and aluminum to maximize strength and minimize weight and of course has the standard issue locking knife blade, pliers and bottle opener.

Have a look at the full review in our gear review section here, and let us know what you think - is Brooks-Range onto something here?

Thanks for the review.   Since this is a forum, let's do something interesting.

What could be improved on this tool?  I am an ambassador for Brooks Range.  We are proud of this tool, but it's not perfect yet!  Has anyone broken one?  Where?  How?  Anyone been frustrated enough to throw it into the bottom of a crevasse?  We want to know.

I've used mine all season, and am happy with it.  It's an improvement over my classic Leatherman in every regard.  However, I admit that it took a little time to learn my way around the tool.

It'd be really cool of we could hear some stories.

      Cheers,

      Donny Roth

I've had mine a few months now and must admit I still have to look at the diagram that came with it to determine where everything is located. They have packed so much into it I get a little lost.

Haven't broke anything yet but only use it under routine circumstances (no need to dismantle my bindings yet in a backcountry emergency). Cannot think of anything else they could add to - however it would be nice to find a place for the spare bit as I don't like to carry the case as it is just extra weight.

No life saving stories to report (yet).

I recently contacted Brooks and they told me this tool has been discontinued because it "did not meet our quality control requirements".

Any suggestions for a second runner up?

Hey Paul, thanks for letting us know that this item is not available any longer - very interesting, will see what I can dig up as we found this to be an excellent product. Not sure of a good alternative but I will see what I can find for you - anyone elese have any feedback on a good backcountry ski tool?

We have just spoken with the Brooks-Range folks and it looks like the Multi-tool has definitely been pulled from production. It seems that their was nothing seriously wrong with the tool (mine is still fiunctioning fine) but there were some issues with the past manufacturer and some minor issues with the strength of the magent that held the bits in place.

No recall was required as there is no danger to anyone, Brooks-Range was just not happy with putting there name on a product that was not up to snuff. The tool will not be available for the remainder of this season - we will be sure to let you know when they are back in stock. The Brooks-Range Multi-Tool is a great product so hopefully we see another iteration soon.

      The BSC Team.

Does anyone know where you can still purchase the Brooks-Range Multi Tool? I contacted them, and they said that a new Multi Tool will be available for Summer 2012, but I am not sure if I want to wait that long.

If anyone knows where one can still be purchased, it would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,

      Elliott
