Full of Surprises: YETI Ranchero Everyday Carry Bakcpack

A few years ago, YETI and Mystery Ranch (who make some of the best load-carrying packs on the market) worked together to design a new pack under the YETI brand. Shortly after, YETI acquired Mystery Ranch and began producing several lines of its own backpacks. This summer, YETI released its new Ranchero Everyday Carry Backpack line, available in 12L, 18L, 22L, and 27L versions.

YETI 27L Ranchero Everyday Carry Backpack

These packs are built for daily use with a host of thoughtful features and internal organization. Inside, you’ll find two stash pockets ideal for water bottles and three zippered side pockets to secure valuables, along with ample space in the main compartment for bulkier items. A separate, dedicated zippered laptop pocket sits just behind the main compartment, keeping your tech safe against your back while also separate from the rest of your gear.

The Ranchero Everyday Carry Backpack incorporates Mystery Ranch’s signature Y-shaped three-way zipper system, called the “RipZip” opening. This system, first seen on the Mystery Ranch Urban Assault Pack (the inspiration for YETI’s Ranchero design), uses three zippers that allow various opening styles—from top-only, to fully clamshell, to a quick-rip motion along the top lid for immediate access.

Thanks to its TuffSkin™ Nylon construction, the Ranchero is both water- and abrasion-resistant—it is a YETI after all, so it’s built tough. The GroundControl™ Base at the bottom of the pack uses rigid materials to keep the backpack upright when placed on the ground, eliminating annoying tip-overs. Optional compression straps can be added for load management or used as extra lashing points for gear.

On the back, a two-piece elastic webbing allows you to securely attach the Ranchero to the handle of rolling luggage. While these straps are not removable, they don’t interfere with comfort when carrying the pack and can be easily tucked behind the back panel foam sheet if unused.

After several weeks of testing the 27L Ranchero—commuting, day hikes, and work trips—I can honestly say it’s unlike any other backpack I’ve tried. Built tough like all YETI products, it also offers more organizational options than you’ll expect. My favourite feature is the Y-shaped zipper system, which lets you open the pack like a traditional top-loader, a duffle, or fully splayed like a clamshell for maximum accessibility. The fact that this backpack stands upright (even completely empty) is another standout advantage I haven’t seen with other designs. While the price tag might give you pause, the Ranchero Everyday Carry is a durable, versatile, and well-designed pack you’ll quickly find indispensable.
