The Best New 4-season Sleeping Pad

Sea To Summit’s Ether Light XT has been my go-to insulated mat for the past few years, as it is one of the most comfortable mats in its class. Building upon this foundation, the new Ether Light XR and XR Pro Insulated Air Sleeping Pads represent the evolution of Sea To Summit’s Air Sprung Cell construction. Traditional sleeping mats often feature vertical or horizontal baffle construction, but these designs typically lack comfort, and when you move your lower body, the mat’s baffles do not prevent the interior air from shifting, which can then affect your upper body, and vice-versa. Sea To Summit resolved this issue years ago when they introduced their line of sleeping mats that utilize individual Air Sprung Cells to enhance comfort and virtually eliminate secondary motion for active sleepers. Their new Ether Light XR Pro Insulated Air Sleeping Pad incorporates 132 individual Air Sprung Cells and a newly developed ThermalCore Insulation, which significantly increases insulation value while minimizing weight and packed volume. The Ether Light XR Pro boasts an R-value of 7.4, making it ideal for 4-season use, yet it packs down smaller than previous versions and weighs only 720g / 25.4oz for the large size. The key to this light and compact insulation lies in multiple Thermal Radiant Material (TRM) layers that are quiet yet thermally efficient.

Sea To Summit offers the Ether Light in both XR and XR Pro versions. These are Sea To Summit’s most insulated air mats, with the XR version having an R-value of 4.1 for 3+ season backpacking, whereas the XR Pro’s R-value of 7.4 is better suited for higher altitude conditions and winter ski traverses. Both mats provide 10cm of plush comfort and a durable construction with double the weld strength of previous models. Like the previous versions, the Ether Light XR and XR Pro Mats come with a stuff sack featuring a built-in Airstream pump for easy inflation and deflation, thanks to the mat’s XPRESS valve system.

If you're looking for the most comfortable and easy-to-use 3+ or 4-season mat on the market, then look no further than the new Sea To Summit Ether Light XR and XR Pro Insulated Air Sleeping Pads.
