        Gnarly Vegan Protein

Protein is an essential part of any diet, especially for more active people who want to maintain their performance or build muscle. Most protein powders on the market are made from Whey which is derived from cow’s milk but for vegans, this is not an option. There is also Soy protein which is derived from the soybean but this can upset your digestion and cause constipation and diarrhea in some people.

        Gnarly Vegan Protein

Gnarly’s Vegan protein powder uses a protein blend made primarily from Pea Protein Isolate along with Chia Seed Protein & Cranberry Seed Protein. One of key advantages that pea protein has over other proteins is that it’s completely hypoallergenic which soy and dairy-based products are not. Pea protein also contains little-to-no toxic heavy metals where as rice, which has been used as a common source of plant-based protein for years, was recently found to contain toxic levels of heavy metals including lead, mercury, cadmium and tungsten. Split peas which Gnarly’s pea protein is made from are high in fibre which can improve digestion and heart health. Peas also contain some other lesser-known substances such as phytochemicals, that perform a wide variety of tasks in the human body after we ingest them. In the case of peas, the key substances include lutein, indoles, sulforaphane, carotenoids, and isoflavones. Once inside the human body, these phytochemicals act as potent antioxidants, warding off certain forms of cancer and specifically finding tissue damage around your eyes to preserve your vision. Peas are also remarkably high in a special group of amino acids called Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs). Because of their unique structure, these amino acids play a powerful role in building and preserving muscle mass, especially during times of fasting or low calorie intake. The peas used in Gnarly’s Vegan Protein are GMO-free, organically grown, and free of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. This pea protein is paired with protein from chia and cranberry seeds to fill in nutritional gaps.

        Gnarly Vegan Protein

It can be challenging to determine how much protein you need in your diet and even harder to actually get that protein into your diet, especially if you are not a meat eater. When determining the optimal protein intake for active individuals, the following factors should be considered: mode and intensity of exercise, protein quality, energy intake, carbohydrate intake, and timing of protein intake. Generally, for endurance exercise, recommended protein intakes range from 1.0g/kg body weight to 1.6g/kg body weight per day, while for strength/power exercise, protein requirements range from 1.6 to 2.0g/kg body weight/day. So, while both endurance and strength training increases the need for protein, increased protein in endurance exercise is needed, predominantly, for an increase in mitochondrial density and related proteins as well as increased leucine oxidation (elevating the overall protein requirement), while increased protein for strength athletes is required for the synthesis of new muscle and/or to repair muscle damage.

Gnarly’s Vegan combines pea protein isolate, chia seed protein and cranberry seed protein to deliver 20g of protein per serving. It’s free of cholesterol, highly digestible, and hypoallergenic. By combining these proteins, Gnarly Vegan contains all 9 essential amino acids and is a rich source of antioxidants, and healthy fatty acids. Simply mix 2 scoops into 8-12 oz of water or add it to your favourite shake or smoothie and you’re ready to go. It has a rich, flavour without the chalky, grainy texture of other plant proteins and mixes up really easily. It is an essential protein for active meal replacement or recovery with no animal-derived ingredients. This plant-based protein blend has 14 essential vitamins and minerals for complete daily vegan nutrition.

I have been preparing protein shakes each day for more than 30 years and find it a great way to ensure I get the protein my body needs as I do not eat much meat and no red meat at all. This is why Gnarly’s Vegan Protein is so appealing to me, it’s convenient, great tasting, healthy and best of all is not derived from whey which comes from cow's milk. Whey is the liquid that remains after milk has been curdled and strained and is a byproduct of the manufacturing of cheese. While this form of protein does have some advantages it is simply not for me. For those non-vegans Gnarly also has a whey protein option which is derived purely from antibiotic-free, non-rBGH grass-fed cow’s milk. It delivers healthy fats, omega-3 acids, and other nutritional essentials that support muscle synthesis, immune health and help repair muscle damage while reducing recovery time. Gnarly has also added pre and probiotics in their whey protein to improve nutrient absorption and support gut health.

        Gnarly Vegan Protein

        • Both Chocolate and Vanilla Vegan Protein are NSF Content Certified and NFS for Sport Certified.
        • NSF Content Certified Products go through a toxicology review, label claim testing, and contaminant testing for heavy metals, microbes, and pesticides.
        • NSF for Sport Certified Products must pass NSF Content Certification and are additionally tested for over 270 substances that are banned by professional sports leagues as well as national and international doping oversight organizations.
        • Gnarly Vegan is classified as a meal replacement because it has a higher calorie, fat, fiber, and vitamin/mineral content than most plant-based protein supplements. Despite this classification, we at Gnarly want to be clear that, when mixed with just water, a 200 calorie serving of Gnarly Vegan does not equate to the nourishment of a balanced meal.
