        Whitewater backcountry

While touring in the Black Queen / Five Mile area yesterday we found evidence of a fairly widespread avalanche cycle up to size 2 on all aspects with notables out of the Hummer A & B Shafts (N), West Ymir (N), Goat Slide (SW), White Queen North Bowl (N), and Evening Ridge (E).  Several of these seemed skier triggered, with the deepest crown (40-50cm on a SW aspect) involving only the storm layers in the upper snowpack.
Of note was the number of thin slabs (10-15cm observed on SE through N aspects) that had released in various pockets within the trees but often not on the more open slopes.

We found several resistant shears within the top 50cm on a North aspect at 2100m, and were able to kick off a surface slough in steep terrain that ran far and fast.

There have been a number of good convective storms in the past few days (yesterday included) which continue to build the snowpack.  I was unable to touch ground while shoving my probe down 3.5m at ridge top.  Looks like it might be a short summer at these elevations.  Massive cornices too - things will get nasty when it heats up!

Despite thinly buried crusts on all but steeper northerly aspects, we had a great day of skiing and even found very reasonable turns on a SW aspect in tight trees to make it back to the car.

        Cheers,

Hey Shaun, did you see any activity while you were out yesterday or cause any sluffs/slides? Sounds like things are slowly stabilizing.

What was the height of recent storm snow, from your photos the skiing looked pretty nice, especially under blue bird skies - quite a different story from two days ago.

Thanks for the info - so hard to get good intel with the CAC reports being so thin and the resorts closed. Much appreciated.

We didn't see or hear any new activity during the day apart from the surface slough I mentioned.  In my one hasty pit at 2100m north asp I found storm snow shears down 10cm, 14cm, 30cm, 45cm and 50cm - all trending towards resistant.
I see the last storm reported by Whitewater was 20cm on the 14th and the webcam is still current so this is good info.  Excellent more detailed snowpack info and recent storm amounts can be found in the CAC technical analysis http://avalanchehazard.avisual.....6e9721a43d

The CAC is extending their forecasting season.  They will:

        • Issue the last regular forecast on April 22nd
        • Keep tabs on conditions until a full melt-freeze cycle occurs or May long weekend, whichever comes first, and:
          • Issue updates every Thursday for the following weekend.
          • Issue additional updates if it looks like major changes are occurring
          • Issue special warnings or other special communications if/when required
        Cheers,
