If anyone asks you what the lure of backcountry skiing is and why you love it, here's your response:

"The backcountry is more than a place on the other side of the park service gate. It's more than a fertile crescent of big fat powder or that fantastic sensation of gliding on snow. The backcountry is a way of life, a state of mind, and a foundational philosophy that we're not meant to be corralled by any boundaries other than topographical. Resorts can be wonderful places, but we ski and snowboard because it puts wings on our feet. Making laps in the shadow of a lift is like flying with a tether on your ankle- fun, but you don't get very far. The backcountry by contrast is about limitless freedom. It's about the right to choose two edges, four edges, or no edges, free heels, fixed heels, or if you are so inclined, stiletto heels. And too, it's about qualities that seem to be dwindling in the modern world, such as self reliance, mutual respect, humility, and the eagerness to follow the difficult path."
