      Kananaskis - Early Season Info.

      Hello,

If people are looking for a good spot and group to get some early season (and late season to summer) skiing info check out biglines.com. One of the forums started there in (possibly) 2006, and is continuing today, gives some really good info on the Highwood Pass area.

      The 2011 forum is: http://www.biglines.com/forum/.....union-tour

       Cheers

      Hey good people,

Big storm forecast overnight. Heading to the lifts due to poor touring (avy) conditions. Hoping to start up some conversation and get some beta flowing. As soon as things calm down a bit I think i'll hit up Black Prince. Anyone venture out there yet? Where else is good? Peace

    • 2011-11-30 22:46:59

So we ended up going to Black Prince tele slopes afterall. Strapped the board to my back and snow-shoed iinstead of taking the AT skis (worried about snow depth and bushwacking with skins). To my surprise great snow, though not much new from overnight. There is a good boot pack to the lake but it ends there, so the ascent was challenging (for my first of the season). Hopefully will post some photos up in the next day or two.

For anyone interested this is a great site to reference conditions and other useful info for the area:

Good to hear the rockies are shaping up - have the wapta booked for the beginning of April, hopeing for a banner year. Anyone been skiing in the wapta area lately?
    • 2011-12-04 23:35:42

Yeah shaping up really nicely! Half of Calgary was in the mountains today though, pretty tracked out. Wapta sounds like a great trip. I've never been through that area, i'll have to do some recon over the winter and let you know.

I don't know if I should be showing this off or keeping it to myself.  Either way there will be enough snow in a couple weeks to go other places.

oct 28 2013 pocaterra cirque, highwood pass.

starting to ski really well at higher elevations,  still early season at lower.  Wind loading is significant and have seen many small < size 1 windslab avalanches.  Have fun out there, remember its early season

Another sign of fun at Highwood Pass, taken on Oct 27, 2013 during the storm day, from the looks of the video, a little bit skiers right:

      Good times out there!

Edit: and word to the wise, don't try to follow the creek drainage back to the parking lot or you will add a few km's of bushwhacking to your day!

skungshotfuel  video was taken on monday the 28th

Thanks for the invite skungshotfuel but I'm probobly going to ski one of the north bowls of Mt  Allen if Nakiska is open this weekend,  I'm also quite curios to see how burstall pass is shaping up.

My opinion from my observations over the last month is winter exists at 8500+ feet.  North slopes are friendlier than others.  Looks like a fair bit more snow is coming in for the weekend, happy trails.

      Thanks dude,

YA. i saw the weather report that snow is coming. But we are going to hit that area and see what the outcome is.

I am hoping access at HIGHWOOD pass parking lot is going to be ok.

Cant see the video. it wont come up.

Well..let me know if you chnage your mind. There is the two of us going to hit some of the fresh snow fall this week!

I was skiing up at ptarmagain yesterday and access to the parking lot is fine. Od head to the pocaterra bowls instead though. We had super grabby sun crust on south facing slopes and wind slab in the north portions that were holding snow... albeit 100cms of snow when I probed and dug my pit. No skinning I had to boot pack everything
