      Kelowna area touring

New to the area of Kelowna and I am wondering if there is any tours close by? Revelstoke is two hours away, Bigwhite is 1hr away. If anyone from the area knows their way around I would be very interested in being shown where to go. I have 12yrs experience snowboarding and can't get enough of the west coast mountains. Let me know where to go I'll be sure to get back to you.

      Thanks

Welcome to Kelowna...  Lots of options from here but the reality is you have to be ready to drive a good distance (Though if you have a sled many options open up between here and Revy...).  When conditions are right (like now) the Coquihalla summit area is good...  If you are into slackcountry, Revelstoke Mtn Resort has it all.  Really depends what you are into...sidecountry yo yos or longer tours / bigger vertical as this will dictate where and who you would go with etc.  Lets connect if you are into the latter but happy to chat about the area as well.

Hey guys...I am also new to the Okanagan (Vernon) and just getting into the backcountry experience...  Just planning to sign up for my AST Level 1 ...be great to connect with some guys that know the area and the ropes...drop me a line if you are interested.

thanks for the quick response. the AST is something I need to do what is the closest course and when is it?

As for "ktownskier" I am definitely interested into some backcountry hikes and campouts when it comes to touring. Again very experienced rider that wants to explore the mountains and experience the backcountry to its fullest. I do not have any equipment however so that is something holding me back. I am just seeing who's out there if there is some interest in touring in the area, and if you have extra equipment then I'd be very interested in getting a trip planned and compensate for equipment usage if that is the case.

Hi KTown - you ever ski the back side at Big White?  Is it worth checking out the Smokers Bowl or East Peak?

      Malakwa is also very good

If you hike up East Peak would you recommend having avalanche equipment on you or is it close enough to in bounds to go without? Just making sure I'm taking the right steps. Where is Malakwa exactly?

You definitely need avy equipment, I've seen it break loose with my own eyes. Malakwa is really close to sicamous, down a forestry road.

Sorry the last post was for malakwa not east peak.

Hi Everyone who has posted on this thread!

I live in Salmon Arm and am looking for some more buddies to go touring with as well. I have been backcountry touring only once and just took my AST1 course in December. I have lived hear for awile but it has taken me a long time to collect the requiste gear and basic training. My aim is to get out to Malakwa more often but you have to be mindful of whether or not the road is plowed (I don't think it is right now). Otherwise, it is a very long skin up the road. But I haven't even been there, this is just knowledge gained from friends.  Anyways, I'd love to expand my circle of backcountry riding buddies so contact me if you are interested in going on an adventure! Cheers

I spend a lot of time up in the coquihalla, about 15 days last year.  PM me if you have avalanche gear and want to come out!

      Hey Everyone,

Anyone in the Kelowna Area planning on getting out touring this winter?

I am an experienced snowboarder with minimal backcountry experience. Have completed the AST 1 and have all the equipment necessary. New to the sport and would be very greatful to have someone show me the ropes!

I am free weekends and have a car capable of making most trips!

      Cheers!
