2011-09-08 21:33:58Happened to a buddy at Jumbo Pass last season.. He was ahead of me, misjdged a turn and was flipped straight in to one. Fortunately I rode into the same clearing to see his skiis flailing in the air, him head down in the well and his arms frantically paddling but he was getting nowhere.. Got to him, hooked my elbow round his and pulled him out.. Scary shit no doubt..

It is something everyone knows "yeah, yeah I know be carefull around trees" but when it happens it is like " what the F#$k?" and then it is usually too late. I recommend everyone jump head first into a tree well with skis on and have a rescuer near by as it will freak you out. A good excercise so that you know what it is all about and you can remain calm when it does happen.
And,... the #1 tip, NEVER, ever, ski with pole straps on - if you do you are a deadman!
Glad to hear your experience ended well - they don't always, and it doesnlt matter how good of a skier you are it is just a matter of time.
