Backcountry skiing in Ontario, please help.

      Hi to all,

I am so glad I found this website.

I am moving to Toronto from Europe this October. I love mountains and snow, but as far as I investigated now there are nt so many mountains in Ontario and especially around Toronto.

I would like to ask all of you to help me to find some closest area to Toronto to get with my skies.

I am quite experienced skier fully equipped (incl. avalanche eq.). Could you please help me to find any area suitable for backcountry skiing (I am not really sure about the term used in Canada). I am looking for something for common visits (available for weekends from Toronto) and than maybe something bigger for a visit once or two times per winter.

Thanks in advance to everybody who could help me.

I am also looking for people from same location to join for skiing, but also for some beer and chat about mountains. I guess i will be totally beginner in Canada, because your conditions are probably totally different. So I would be glad for any input

      Jakub

"Hey All – Also looking for Ottawa area ski buddies.  Moved to Ottawa from the West Coast where ski toured the Whistler, Squamish, Pemberton, Baker areas thoroughly.

I'm proposing to organize an meetup for Ottawa Area Backcountry Skiiers to share info.

      WINTER IS COMING"

      PMed you.

"As a former Ottawa skier I am interested in what areas you find to ski tour in and if you want us to start a new Ontario > Ottawa Routes page let me know as we would be happy to start posting routes for you if you can provide some?"

      I would love this.

      BUMP...

I just came across this thread. I'm also in the Ottawa area. I havn't done any real backcountry but I definitely want to get into it having been told about the chic chocs recently!

I have a student pass for Tremblant so I spend a good bit of time out there and I have a night pass for edelweiss.

Was there any further developments on this?

Epic conditions on the escarpment right now - around 4' deep, dry and light.

DSP, I'm in Ottawa area as well. Where did you get your touring gear from? I'm planning to get into touring.

      Greetings everyone.

For those who do not have AST but may be interested, there will be an AST-1 course in Ottawa provided by Ski Chic-Chocs on Dec. 2 and 3. Looks like it's going to the only AST training in Ontario this coming season, according to the list at AvalancheCanada.ca website. Details available on Google under keywords "AST1 Ottawa".

If serious about going to places in the backcountry, it will be better with AST training.
