Backcountry skiing in Ontario, please help.

        Hi to all,

I am so glad I found this website.

I am moving to Toronto from Europe this October. I love mountains and snow, but as far as I investigated now there are nt so many mountains in Ontario and especially around Toronto.

I would like to ask all of you to help me to find some closest area to Toronto to get with my skies.

I am quite experienced skier fully equipped (incl. avalanche eq.). Could you please help me to find any area suitable for backcountry skiing (I am not really sure about the term used in Canada). I am looking for something for common visits (available for weekends from Toronto) and than maybe something bigger for a visit once or two times per winter.

Thanks in advance to everybody who could help me.

I am also looking for people from same location to join for skiing, but also for some beer and chat about mountains. I guess i will be totally beginner in Canada, because your conditions are probably totally different. So I would be glad for any input

        Jakub

Hey Greg henderson, yes please enter the SOAP BOX COMP, we would welcome as many entries as you have, we need more input for everyone in the east. Let us know when you are getting out backcountry skiing and enter our comp at the same time!

Our plan is to create as many new section in the Eastern Routes as everyone can provide. If you can help send me an e-mail at info (at) backcountryskiingcanada.com and I can send you some details.

And "Dhwilson" let us know what you are getting up to in the ADK's and around Ottawa,... my old stomping grounds!

Hey all.  I'm new to the site but am very happy to have finally found y'all.

@dhlwilson - Do you know of any good spots around the ottawa area?  I'm going to start exploring on a (hopefully) biweekly basis but would really appreciate any tips you might have on places to start.

And a very sarcastic 'screw you' to admin from nelson.  Took my first few touring runs off the trash chutes at whitewater a few years ago and have been chasing the experience ever since.  Thanks for bringing up the idea of an Ontario section, I'd be thilled to participate.

Hey Drake, I never really toured while in Ottawa but I would imagine Gatineau Park would hold some great lines - maybe check out the biking trails. Also Mont St. Marie also in the Gatineau has some terrain that would be ideal. If you find anything be sure to let us know!

We've got about 40cm's of Ontario cold smoke up here in Huntsville right now. Wink Been snowing hard the past couple of days and temperatures are hovering around -15 to -20. When the sun came out this afternoon it was time to rip some turns. The new-to-me set-up - Madshus Arctic Troll skis, Salamon radv6 boots and Salamon SNS Backcountry bindings - provided a surprising amount of support, allowing for some nice wide tele turns in my short, but steep and deep, in-town stashes. Still jonsing for some longer decents, but man was it nice to rip the first turns of the year and get back on the boards.

If anyone is looking to get off the groomed trails up here in Huntsville, shoot me a message and I'll take you for a tour!

Heading up to National Parc D'Aiguebelle just north of Rouyn Noranda Quebec, in a couple of weeks, for some hut-to-hut back country skiing. Any thoughts?

        Post some pics soon.

        Hi Graham

What you're looking for in Huntsville is all around you.., Wink

There's a small contingent of us who have been doing the BC deal here for many years...

If you get a chance check out the New York State Ski Blog.. Search "tales from the Hinterland.. Lots of local to Huntsville (yeah I know.. Kinda weird finding Muskoka beta in a NY site..) from past seasons.

SBR is a manager at Algonquin Outfitters (Oxtongue Lake)

I'm TD in those threads/reports.  I also started a blog last year - the Muskoka Backcountry Ski Blog ..I didn't get a chance to continue with it due to personal commitments, but I might try to get it going again.

Anyways, just letting you know that you're not alone as you might think.

Tons of fresh cold smoke is waiting.. (Vert is another story.)

        Dave,

Actually tried to track you down in the summer when i was a passing the store out near the park. A couple guys at the AO shop in Hville told me you are into bc skiing -- Will or Bob I think. Anyway, love to touch base and pick your brain for ideas around the area and beyond...thanks for the message, hope we can make something happen soon.

        Cheers,

First post here but after I found this website and your posts I thought I should.

Okay so Ive never actually backcountry skiied but I have skiied all over Canada and have always wanted to.  I live in collingwood and have been researching backcountry skiing for a little while and though i would share what I do know.

Okay from what I can gather the best place to go back country skiing in ontairo is this place http://www.bellevuevalleylodge.....rates.html

I have also heard good things about Talisman ski hill in beaver valley.  it was shut down a few years ago and I know a few people who hike up and ski down.

I would be interested in knowing though if anyone has found anything good around the kolapore highlands.

I like the idea of getting a section together for just ontario.  I know it is flat but there have to be hidden jems here and there

        Kelly,
I would love to discuss Batchawana & Searchmont area ski touring! I will also send you a PM in hopes that we can discuss this. Thanks

        Hey all, I'm in.

I'm in Sault Ste. Marie, and I'll take anyone for a tour whenever they like in the Batchawana or Searchmont regions, both of which have some pretty nice hills with over a thousand foot verticals!

I told Brad that I would document some of my routes, but those won't be ready until next year at the soonest, so shoot me a line. My first trip out will be in about 3 days!

        Bump...

So, I'm relatively new to Ontario (this will be my second winter in succession) and I'm just looking for any fellow Ottawans looking for lift served and/or 'backcountry' ski partners. Will be skiing Edelweiss regularly, but I'm especially interested in getting amongst the Adirondack BC and the more localized spots. Longer trips are certainly not out of the question though.

        Thanks!

I will be in the Ottawa area Dec to Feb and would be interested in some backcountry adventures.

Email me and we can gather. mcgrec@mcmaster.ca

I'm working on developing a few routes in the Almaguin Highlands just east of Algonquin. It's mostly pruning known trails or lines to make them more skiable. I lived out west for many years and skied there and guess what: We have crazy good powder around here. So the hills aren't so high, big deal. If anyone wants to argue with me about teh snow I will put you to clearing my driveway in December or February!

If you have a saw or bush axe and are willing to help clear a few lines I could use some help this fall.

        Cheers

        Jeff

Hey All – Also looking for Ottawa area ski buddies.  Moved to Ottawa from the West Coast where ski toured the Whistler, Squamish, Pemberton, Baker areas thoroughly.

I'm proposing to organize an meetup for Ottawa Area Backcountry Skiiers to share info.

As a former Ottawa skier I am interested in what areas you find to ski tour in and if you want us to start a new Ontario > Ottawa Routes page let me know as we would be happy to start posting routes for you if you can provide some?

        Sweet forum.

Just bought some proper touring bindings/planks, but I've done a bunch of hiking around the Georgian Escarpment. Looking to find and share new touring areas.
