Elevation - A Backcountry Film by Powder Whore

Here's the details on the film:

Before resorts, lift tickets and overpriced pizza, there was adventure in skiing. Before the mountains were harnessed with lifts, bound with ropes and scarred with designated runs, they were wild. Actions with consequences were chosen and the individual was held responsible. No liability forms or waivers. The lifts came and made the mountains small, tame and in time, boring. We were sold that THIS is skiing. And we obeyed. A revolution is taking place. With this resurgence into the backcountry we look for real adventure beyond the tightly wound, firmly stretched orange and black ropes that "protect" us from knowing freedom. The backcountry is the imagination unleashed and you get out what you put in. There are real boundaries and limitations though; avalanches, exposure to the elements, conditions and fatigue all challenge one to grow in knowledge, patience and fitness. The joy comes in discovering these limitations, moving through fear and exploring beyond. Putting in the perspiration and inspiration leads to ELEVATION.

-Holden Village, a peaceful Lutheran Retreat deep in the Cascades, hosts Michele Manning and a wayward band of skiers who discover its powdery blessings from above.

-The Dorais brothers, Jason and Andy, attempt speed skiing records on the Grand Teton and Mount Rainier.

-Andrew McLean explores true expedition life in the Ruth Gorge of Alaska.

-Returning to health, Noah Howell reveals the depths of his season.

-Jake Sakson and Paul Kimbrough clean house in their backyard range, the Tetons of Wyoming.

-Will Cardamone and Charlie Cannon hole up for turns in a hut deep in Oregon's Wallowa Mountains.

-Bob Athey offers up crusty bits of wisdom gathered from decades of being bitter in the backcountry.

-Cindi-Lou and Zach Grant build the cabin of their dreams in the heart of the Wasatch Mtns.
-The Provo brothers, Neil and Ian, reign supreme in the Tordrillo Mountains proving once again that Alaska is the undisputed king of big lines and deep powder. This movie is part ski porn, part documentary and a full on propaganda piece promoting the joys and wonder of exploring on skis and split-board. What we lack in flashy graphics, hi-tech camera gear and helicopter budgets, we make up for with try-hard. Capturing wild mountains and those willing to put in the time, education, respect and energy that they demand is our pleasure. Enjoy!

Favourite part was when they were skiing the pow pow. Actually, I liked seeing the labourous trudging up through the pow - it gets me excited for what comes next.

These guys are the real deal. They are a small homegrown ski film company, without big budgets, or the bigest name atheletes. Just a bunch of guys from Utah with a dream. More often than not they are earning thier turns and their shots, which helps promote skiing as a fun and accessible sport.

Favorite part of the trailer: Interviews with random folks in the backcountry.

      Fave Trailer Moment(s):

      1. Ian Provo dropping in 2:40-2:41 smears the snow off the near vertical face as he puts down the landing gear to set up for his first turn
      2. Light Pillar at 0:33
      3. Time lapse stuff
      4. Bobblehead on the bus

      Favorite parts:

      1.  Earn your turns.  Nuff said.

      2.  Skiing with a rope.  Hardcore.

      3.  Minimal GoPro.  Cause that's been done to death.

You know what I love, the brief shot of skiers skinning up. The anticipation, the optimism, the snese of know what is yet to come on...  We all know the feeling, the patience, the time to take in your surroundings while finding your groove. Not enough films strike this balance in my opinon. It's an aspect of the backcountry that, for me, is as important sometimes as the descent.
