Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag - REVIEW

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel BagPatagonia makes three sizes of a duffel bags called the 'Black Hole'. These bags are ideally suited for backcountry skiers who are heading into a backcountry lodge, undertaking an expedition or just a trip to the local or not so local ski resort. The Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bags come in 45L, 60L, 90L and 120L versions and, as the name suggests, they can haul a tonne of gear.

There are two carrying options depending upon how much weight you are packing and how long you need to carry it. For lighter loads the traditional webbing handles on the top of the duffel have a snap closure to ensure you get both handles every time. If you are using the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bags to their limit then you will want to consider carrying them back pack style with the integrated padded shoulder strap system which can be removed if you do not require them. This frees up your hand for carrying more gear.

The bottom of the Black Hole Duffel is padded to protect it's contents and also gives your back some protection from those 'pokey-outy-bits' in your gear that always seem to land directly centred on your spine. There is also a a reinforced haul loop on either end of the back should it need to go vertical up a rock face or for grabbing it out of the trunk.

Thanks for the write up.  Been looking at these bags for a while now.

In the pictures of the person carrying the bag which size of bags are they carrying?

Im unsure of sizing requirements, do I go 60L or 90L?  Ive been chewing on this a lot.

I'd also like to make a suggestion for the reviews, post the date the review was posted online below the reviews title, that way readers can easliy see if it is a 3-month or 3-year old gear review.

      Cheers.

Hey Gingerkid, the orange bag is the 90 litre version and big enough for a few weeks, I just used it for a two week colorado ski trip to the SIA show. The smaller blue bag in the photos is the 60 litre version, this is more ideal for a weekend but not more - kind of small for a skiing or outdoors trip. I highly recommend the bags, good and sturdy!

Great suggestion for the reviews but if you go here you will see that they are all dated and rated.

If you are looking at buying the bags click through the link at the bottom of the review as there you will find the best prices around and also if you purchase this way then Patagonia knows about it and it gives our review some credibility and helps us be able to do more reviews in the future.

      Hope that this helps?

      Thanks

The indecision is killing me.  60, 90 or both, haha.

I don't think the 90L would be considered airline carryon size, while the 60 would be.

Can't order patagonia thru backcountry to Canada though, but I can order one from a shop around here

Go for both - great bags and as you mentioned they both server very different purposes.

      Backcountry won't ship to Canada?

If you follow the link on the bottom of the review on the "Other Products from Patagonia" it is in there and you can buy it direct from Patagonia, if you are doing a mail order anyways.

You'll love the bags and the back pack feature!

Went with the 90L now.  Will see how that is.  Probably will end up with 60L at some point.

This review really helped with deciding to get the bag.

      Thanks

      Edit

Just picked up the 90L in Narwhale Grey from the local gear shop yesterday.  Nice bag, should serve its purpose.  Will use it this weekend and next weekend.

60L would have most definatley been too small, glad I went with the 90L

      Cheers
