Next Level Ski Touring Sunglasses from Smith

For Fall/Winter 2025, Smith Optics introduces two new ChromaPop Photochromic lenses, available in their Embark and Pursuit glacier glasses. Designed to enhance contrast, improve depth perception, and reduce haze with a natural light boost, the ChromaPop lenses now come in Copper Rose Gold Mirror and Yellow Violet Mirror tints. These new photochromic versions feature UV-sensitive, self-adjusting technology that adapts seamlessly to changing light conditions. Offering 100% UV protection, each lens is also coated with water- and oil-resistant finishes for added durability. Engineered to remain consistent under varying temperatures, the lenses maintain full contrast and colour enhancement across their entire tint range. Specially formulated for cold environments, they deliver all-day visual clarity and adaptive coverage in a single lens, no matter how the light shifts.

Both the Embark and Pursuit Sunglasses feature removable, vented side shields that reduce peripheral light from entering through the sides and reflecting off the lenses into your eyes. These shields also help block snow and wind, making both models perfect for ski touring. Made from soft, moldable TPU, the shields conform comfortably to your face for maximum protection. On the Pursuit model, they attach magnetically with a satisfying, secure click.

      Smith Embark Sunglasses

While the Embark offers a more traditional sunglass design, the Pursuit provides goggle-like coverage with excellent airflow and comfort. If you prioritize maximum protection and coverage, the Pursuit is the better choice. If you prefer the classic look and feel of traditional sunglasses—while still enjoying the benefits of ChromaPop Photochromic lenses—the Embark is ideal.

Both models include a goggle-inspired retainer strap that keeps the glasses secure during high-speed descents. The frames are lightweight yet durable, made from Evolve bio-based material that contains at least 55% castor oil, delivering performance on par with 100% nylon frames. Each pair comes with a storage case. The Pursuit also includes a clear replacement lens and packs into a low-profile case designed for minimal bulk.

      Smith Pursuit Sunglasses

The beauty of Smith’s Photochromic lenses lies in their adaptability—offering the vivid colour and clarity of ChromaPop technology in a ski-touring-friendly design. One lens for any light condition, all day, every day.

While I prefer the traditional style of the Embark Sunglasses, some may want the full wrap-around coverage of the Pursuit Sunglasses. In my testing, both did a great job of preventing snow from blowing into my eyes. The removable side shields made sure of this, while the photochromic lenses were ideally suited to the ever-changing light that is a part of backcountry skiing.
