      • Thule Motion 3 XXL Low Review

      Thule Motion 3 XXL Low

The Thule Motion 3 series is a significant upgrade to the Motion XT model of roof top cargo box. Thule has designed the Motion 3 to be more aerodynamic to both reduce noise and wind resistance. The Motion 3 is also designed for more current vehicle shapes. They have shortened the backend so not to interfere with pop-up tailgates and has a cutout for rear fin shaped antennas. And they have reduced the side height to make it easier to load. The Motion 3 series also come with additional sizes including two lower models. These added features and design come with an increase in price, read the whole review below to see if these are worth it for your backcountry equipment transportation needs.

SHOW THE REST OF THE REVIEW / PHOTOS / VIDEOS
We reviewed the largest Motion 3 XXL Low. It does have a nice low profile that looks more aerodynamic than the older rooftop cargo boxes. But despite this low profile the Motion 3 XXL Low still has a cargo capacity of 450 l (15.9 Cubic Feet) and can accommodate skis up to 215 cm.

We did not test out the effect of the carrier on mileage, however, there was very little wind noise. In fact, on a particular blustery travel day with strong cross winds we expected some rattling noise, but Motion 3 sat quietly on our Jeep.

We also added the Thule Box Ski Carrier Adapter and were able to easily fit 5 pairs of backcountry skis and poles. Thule indicates that the XXL can carry up to 7 pairs of skis, but you would have to stack them up.

The Ski Carrier has enough clearance for most bindings. And one feature I liked about the Ski Carrier Adapter is that it was easy to add and remove while the Motion 3 was on the roof of the jeep.

The XXL can accommodate skis up to 215 cm in length. We had skis between 180-190 cm that fit in nicely. There are three tie-down points that helped keep our skis and poles secure.

Another nice new feature of the Motion 3 is it has a much lower sides so that it is easy to load and unload gear. Although with the Jeep, I still needed to use the rear tire and backdoor sill to load and unload the carrier.

The Motion 3 is also able to be accessed from either side. With previous models the dual side hinges could be a little annoying to close, however, Thule has added metal reinforcement close to the rear hinge that makes it easy to open and close with one hand.

A small, but thoughtful change they have made from previous versions is there is a visual (red indicator on the handle) when you do not have the lid properly seated.
      Thule Motion 3 Cargo Box
I have already mentioned some of the most important changes that allow Motion 3 to fit on more vehicles, but I think the most important change with the Motion 3 is the shorter back end that allows for the bulkier rear hatch doors. We had the longest Motion 3 on our Jeep Grand Cherokee, and I had it as far forward as it would go and our rear hatch just touched the back of the Motion 3. So, it is important that you pay attention to the front clearance. Likely we should have had the XXL Low to better fit our Jeep.

An important feature that the Motion 3 shares with other Thule is the PowerClick mounting system. I like that you hear an audible ‘click’ when you have tightened the clamp to the proper torque (the same principle as a torque wrench).

      Features:

The Thule Motion 3 is a replacement of the Motion XT model so we have split the features into those that came from the Motion XT and those that are new to the Motion 3.

      Key Established and Enhanced Features:

      • PowerClick Quick-Mount System: A hallmark of Thule carriers, the PowerClick system allows for easy and secure mounting. It features an integrated torque indicator that "clicks" when the box is properly tightened, ensuring a safe and fast fit to the roof racks.
      • SlideLock System: This system provides a secure locking mechanism with separate locking and opening functions. It automatically locks the lid in place and offers a clear visual indication when the box is closed securely.
      • Dual-Side Opening: For convenient access to gear from either side of the vehicle, the Motion 3 retains the popular dual-side opening feature. This simplifies loading and unloading, especially in tight parking spaces.
      • Durable Construction: Built with robust ABS plastic, the Motion 3 is designed to withstand the rigors of travel and protect contents from the elements.
      • One-Key System Compatibility: Users can often integrate the Motion 3 locks with other Thule products for the convenience of a single key.

New and Improved Features for Motion 3:

      • Aerodynamic Design: The Motion 3 boasts a wing-shaped profile with a dynamic, forward-leaning nose. This design is engineered to minimize wind resistance, contributing to improved fuel efficiency and a quieter ride compared to less streamlined carriers.
      • Full Trunk Access: The forward positioning of the cargo box on the vehicle's roof is designed to minimize the risk of contact with the vehicle's rear hatch, allowing for unobstructed access to the trunk.
      • Redesigned Shell Shape & Modern Aesthetics: The Motion 3 features a more contemporary and sleeker silhouette to match current car designs. This includes a lowered nose, a forward-shifted high point, an integrated opening/closing handle, and an angled rear for potentially improved hatch clearance over previous models.
      • Improved Aerodynamics: Thule has further optimized the aerodynamics, claiming up to a 5% reduction in drag compared to the already efficient Motion XT series. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for fuel economy, including for electric vehicles.
      • Enhanced Functionality & Ergonomics:
        • Smoother Opening Mechanism: The lid design has been improved for smoother opening and closing, potentially operable with one hand due to a sturdy lid and wide handle. Some models include a reinforced brace or wire cage on the lid for more uniform operation.
        • Intuitive Locking Mechanism: While retaining the SlideLock system, emphasis is placed on its intuitive nature, ensuring the lid is securely locked with an automatic click and clear indication.
        • Easier Loading: Some design tweaks may include reduced height on the sides of the box, making it physically easier to load items.
      • Expanded Range of Sizes, Including New Low-Profile Options: A significant update is the introduction of new sizing options, most notably the "Low" profile versions (e.g., XL Low, XXL Low). These are designed for users with limited garage clearance or those seeking a more integrated look, without massively compromising storage capacity.
      • New Accessories: Thule is offering an expanded line of accessories specifically for the Motion 3. These can include:
        • Interior Box Light: For better visibility inside the cargo box.
        • Protective Box Liner/Cargo Liner: To protect both the box and its contents.
        • Specialized Bags (e.g., GoPack Duffel Set): Designed to optimize packing within the cargo box.
        • Storage Cover: To protect the box when not in use.
        • Ski and Snowboard Holder/Adapter: For secure transport of winter sports equipment.

      Verdict:

The Thule Motion 3 is a worthwhile upgrade. From an aesthetic point of view, the Motion 3 looks like it belongs on our Jeep Grand Cherokee. And with its aerodynamic profile I really appreciate the greatly reduced wind noise from previous ‘box shaped’ carriers. As mentioned, the XXL is a little long for our jeep, but I don’t think I would miss the shorter by 15 cm Motion 3 XL Low.

And speaking of the difference in models, there is also only 7 cm (2.5 in.) difference in the height of the XXL and XXL low. I likely would stick with the Low module as storage is not a premium with our adventure travel needs. However, if additional storage space is an issue, you may want to go with the Thule Force 3 XXL that has over 600 L (21.5 sq ft) of space.

        PROS:

      • Multiple sizes
      • Forward mounting for vehicles with back hatches
      • Rugged Aerodynamic design
      • Dual-sided opening
      • Easy on/off mounting.

        CONS:

      • Expensive
      • Reduced Height for storage
