      • Ternua Sunlight Jacket

      Ternua Sunlight Jacket

Ternua in Basque means Newfoundland. Basque sailors left the shores of Cantabria, Spain and sailed far into the waters of Newfoundland, Canada where they were surrounded by whales. The name honours the brave men that endured the harsh Atlantic weather in their pursuit of food and preserving a sustainable living environment. Ternua is committed to saving the whales and supporting alpine sports, developing sustainable products and keeping the spirit of adventure alive. Their Basque slogan, “Non gogoa, han zangoa” an ancient Basque proverb translates to “Where there is a will, there is a way”. Ternua Outfits adventurers with technical, functional and innovative clothes.

      Ternua Sunlight Jacket

The Ternua Sunlight Jacket comes in three colours: blue (featured here), purple and black. It has a technical style with three fabrics throughout for warmth and mobility.

Polartec Alpha insulates the torso while Polartec Power Stretch Pro gives ample mobility to the shoulders and arms.

      Ternua Sunlight Jacket

The Ternua Sunlight is a mid to outer-layer soft shell/insulation layer, depending on weather conditions, as it is not waterproof. It’s warm, breathable, lightweight and compactable making it extremely versatile as a go-to layer for cold weather sports such as ski touring, climbing and hiking.

Trimmed at the cuffs and waistline with an elastic binding, the Ternua Sunlight sports two thumbholes, two hand warmer pockets and a mid sizes collar. Made of 100% polyester, this jacket isn’t just warm but also lightweight and most of all, breathable. The various materials are connected with flatlock seams to ensure there is no bunching under a pack strap or hip belt. It’s super comfortable and provides a very technical style for those who like that look.

The Ternua Sunlight Jacket is made up of three principle fabric construction; Pertex Quantum, Polartec Alpha and Polartec Power Stretch Pro. Using the finest yarns with the maximum thread count, Pertex Quantum is known for its feather light weight at 30g per m2, it also compacts down to nothing without sacrificing durability. This is found on the torso, front and back on the Ternua Sunlight. The Polartec Alpha fills the garment with lightweight and breathable synthetic insulation, giving the “puffy” look to the torso and neck. Polartec Alpha is also helpful for wicking moisture, has a fast dry time and still insulates even when wet. The Polartec Power Stretch Pro is form fitting with 4-way stretch material and adds warmth without weight. The durable nylon outer layer is wind and abrasion resistant, and the inner polyester layer also assists in wicking moisture from your skin. This is found on the arms and sides of the torso.

Pertex Quantum is a lightweight fabric with a high warmth to weight ratio, found on the outer torso of this midlayer.

      Ternua Sunlight Jacket

Thumbholes are useful for keeping snow and other elements off your forearm while moving around in mountain environments. Flatlock stitching is tough and adds to the technical look of this garment.

      Ternua Sunlight Jacket

      Features:

      - Lightweight, Compact, Breathable, Warm
      - Flatlock Stitching
      - Two hand warmer pockets
      - Elastic cuffs with thumbholes
      - Adjustable draw cord hem
      - Easy to grasp pull taps on all zippers.
      - Technical Style

Two hand warmer pockets have large, easy to grab pull-tabs and are easy to find with the bright yellow trim.

      Ternua Sunlight Jacket

The collar fits nice and will protect you from the elements, the zipper garage help keeps the tab out of your face and is easy to grab with gloves or mittens.

      Ternua Sunlight Jacket

A variety of colours on stitching, zippers, fabrics and features give this jacket a very technical European style.

      Ternua Sunlight Jacket

      Verdict:

This is a great mid-layer with all the functional materials required in such garments. It’s super comfortable, lightweight, provides great mobility, keeps you warm while your active and fits well without. Ternua is reputable company in Europe that has recently expanded to North America and has been accepted with rave reviews so far. I would highly recommend this product for any endurance exercise in the mountains; skiing, climbing, trekking, etc. It’s found in Ternua’s men’s clothing but would recommend the Sunlight for females as well. On the down side I only have a few minor things. First, the Sunlight only has two hand warmer pockets, but could use an additional inside or napoleon pocket. And second, I find the design a little too technical/European for this reviewer’s tastes, as it has many fabrics and bright colours, but after all this is a technical piece and that appeals to a lot of adventure types.

Ternua, meaning Newfoundland, has an easily recognizable whale tail logo.
