      • SIC Okeanos Air 11’ Stand Up Paddleboard

SIC Okeanos Air 11’ Stand Up Paddleboard

SIC (which stands for “Sandwich Islands Composites”) designs and manufactures Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUPs), Surfboards, foils and wing foils. The company was started by shaper/waterman Mark Raaphorst who learned the craft in Maui, Hawaii where he established Ding King Fiberglass Works, a repair shop which provided insight into board construction and materials.  Soon after Raaphorst was shaping boards and building outrigger canoes, and today after more than thirty years of experience he is considered one of the pioneers of Stand Up Paddleboarding and has created some of the world’s most winning race boards. In this review, we’re going to take an in-depth look at the SIC Okeanos Air 11’ Stand Up Paddleboard which is a lightweight inflatable recreational touring board.

The Okeanos Air SUP is based on the design of its composite cousin which debut in 2019 and quickly became an award winner. The Okeanos Air 11’ shares the same displacement touring shape and overall design of the non-inflatable version so if an inflatable SUP is not for you then consider the hardboard option.

With dimensions of 335 x 73.7 x 17.5cm / 11’ x 28” x 6.9”, this 305L paddle board is ideal for paddlers looking to haul gear, go paddleboard camping, try their hand at downwinding and just the average recreational paddler looking for an efficient and easy to paddle SUP. Its long sleek shape helps it cut through the water with relative ease and its almost 7” thickness means that it is stable when the water gets choppy.

There are two sets of bungee tie-downs on the Okeanos Air 11’, one smaller bungee at the front and a more generous tie-down at the back of the board which can accommodate a lot of gear for extended multi-day paddles. These tie-downs are fully adjustable so you can cinch gear tight no matter the size.

At the front of the Okeanos Air 11’, you’ll find an action camera mount so you can securely fasten your Go-Pro or other waterproof camera to capture some of the paddling adventures you’re sure to enjoy.

The top deck of the Okeanos Air 11’ is covered almost entirely by a soft and grippy honeycomb EVA deck pad which provides traction and comfort on both short and long paddles. In the centre of the board, you’ll find a soft neoprene grab handle for carrying the board—given its minimal weight SIC saw no need for a handle on the nose or tail.

One of the biggest advantages of the Okeanos Air 11’ Stand Up Paddleboard is the three-fin set up which consists of a removable centre fin securely fixed in the AIR7 Polycarbonate Fin Box and two smaller side fins. The much longer centre fin provides stability and superior tracking on flat water while the two smaller side fins can be used without the centre fin for paddling in shallower water.

In addition to the board, the Okeanos Air 11’ also comes with a Coil Leash, Repair kit, Dual action high-pressure pump, Fin tool and Storage pack complete with roller wheels. The storage pack provides a compact place for storing your board but also a convenient way to transport it thanks to the built-in wheels. While rolling the pack is much easier than carrying it there is also a pack harness stowed behind a zippered panel on the back of the pack should you need to carry the board over rough terrain to more remote put-ins.

      Verdict:

Being the first stand up paddleboard we’ve reviewed from SIC, I was excited to get the Okeanos Air 11’ out on the water to test and thankfully this fall has been filled with warm/sunny days. After several days on the water, my first impression of the Okeanos Air 11’ SUP was that it is a very fast board that paddles easily and tracks well. Given its long and narrow shape, the Okeanos Air cut through the water with ease. Without much rocker on the nose and width for stability in moving water the Okeanoo s Air is much more well-suited to flat water than it is to moving water. Rather than trying to be a versatile do-it-all kind of SUP, the Okeanos Air focuses on being a proficient lake board where efficiency is the name of the game. The long centre fin keeps the board tracking straight and improves overall stability when combined with the two smaller side fins which are also removable with the provided Allen key tool. Having the flexibility of paddling the Okeanos Air 11’ with all three fins on the lake or removing the centre fin and using just the much smaller secondary fins in shallower water or on creeks and rivers provides great opportunities in how and where you can paddle.

While wider SUPs are more kid and beginner friendly they do tend to slow you down on the water. I wouldn’t say that the Okeanos Air is aimed directly at the intermediate paddler but given its sleek shape it is just not as stable as some other wider SUPs we’ve reviewed. The weight of the Okeanos Air 11’ is also a huge plus, at just 10.1 kg / 22.3 lbs it is really light and easy to transport and manoeuvre even for smaller women or kids.

Value for your money is where SIC delivers with the Okeanos Air 11’ SUP, not only is the Paddleboard well designed, well built and tough as nails but you also get a quality wheeled backpack for ease of transport. Most SUPs come with very basic packs and very few come with built-in roller wheels which make it so much easier to roll the SUP through airports rather than having to shoulder the weight. The design of the pack is well thought out and the backpack harness is conveniently stored behind a zippered cover when not needed so it keeps the entire pack very streamlined and ideal for travel. While a paddle is not included I still think you still get a lot for the price with the Okeanos Air 11’ SUP. Most SUPs that do include a paddle typically include a very heavy and basic one and given that the Okeanos Air 11’ is a higher quality board I am glad to see that they spent the money on the board and not on including a cheap paddle.

The SIC Okeanos Air 11’ Stand Up Paddleboard is designed for speed, agility, and stability and its sleek styling, quality craftsmanship, and attention to detail make it a board worth considering.
