Transporting ski gear to and from the resort can be cumbersome and hard on your equipment, whether you are driving to your local hill or flying halfway around the world. This is where Osprey’s new Mountain Bound Ski & Snowboard Roller Bag and Mountain Bound Ski & Snowboard Boot Backpack Plus come in. They are designed to make the journey as effortless as possible while keeping your gear protected and well organized. I’ve reviewed several ski bags and boxes over the years, but the new Mountain Bound collection from Osprey feels like a new era in durable ski/snowboard travel bags and backpacks. Read on for the full review.
Thanks to its adjustable design, the Mountain Bound Ski & Snowboard Roller Bag can accommodate one or two pairs of skis or a single snowboard, up to a maximum length of 195 cm.
To ensure an easy ride over rough surfaces, the bag features oversized 90 mm sealed-bearing wheels housed in durable, injection-moulded wheel wells and mounted on a reinforced chassis. This combo gives you reliable rolling performance without adding unnecessary weight. There are also strong plastic skid plates affixed to the lower back side, so you can easily pull the roller-bag up curbs without worrying about any damage to the fabric.
There are six padded external webbing grab handles around the exterior, so you always have a convenient place to grab, lift, or drag the bag.
Two external compression straps are padded and double as haul handles, and they also serve as attachment points for the travel shoulder strap (sold separately). These multiple grab options make it more comfortable to carry and help you navigate your way through crowded airports and snowy city streets.
Built with highly water-resistant NanoTough fabric, the Mountain Bound Ski & Snowboard Roller Bag utilizes padded sidewalls to protect your skis or board from the riggers of travel and foul weather.
bluesign® Approved, 420D NanoTough™: 100% recycled ocean-sourced nylon, coated with carbonate
To make hauling your ski or snowboard boots, helmet, goggles, and other small accessories as efficient as possible, Osprey created the compact, ultra-organized Mountain Bound Ski & Snowboard Boot Backpack Plus. The highly water-resistant NanoTough fabric is impressively durable and stiff enough that the pack holds its shape even when it’s not fully loaded, without adding a lot of extra weight. That structure is a testament to the strength of the 100% recycled ocean-sourced nylon used throughout.
The padded main compartment protects and secures your ski or snowboard boots, while a separate zippered compartment keeps your helmet and goggles away from wet, snowy boots. This layout helps prevent damage and keeps your more fragile gear cleaner and drier during travel.
There is even a soft-lined top zip compartment for phone, sunglasses and small accessories.
Osprey uses their AirScape fabric in the back panel of the backpack, which provides comfort and ventilation thanks to the mesh-covered, ridged foam design. It is also naturally snowshedding to ensure the pack stays dry.
Osprey uses its AirScape back panel on the Mountain Bound Boot Backpack Plus, with mesh-covered, ridged foam that provides both comfort and ventilation. The design also sheds snow naturally, helping the pack stay dry against your back.
The Adjustable sternum strap comes with a built-in safety whistle, and the 38 mm webbing hipbelt is removable if you prefer a cleaner profile or don’t need the extra support.
A padded shoe-changing mat is included in its own zippered pocket and gives you a dry, comfortable platform to change into your ski or snowboard boots—ideal for “parking lot changers."
The Mountain Bound Ski & Snowboard Boot Backpack Plus is a bluesign product which means its materials and components meet rigorous third-party environmental and social standards.
There are two padded webbing grab handles conveniently placed on the Boot Backpack Plus for quick grabs from the car, luggage carousel, or gear room. You can also carry a pair of skis—A-frame style, or a snowboard on the back, thanks to the burly webbing and clips.
Osprey also sells a regular version of the Mountain Bound Ski & Snowboard Boot Backpack, and it differs from the Plus in a few key ways. The Plus version adds dual side access to the main compartment along with A-frame ski carry and vertical snowboard carry options. The regular version has a 45 L volume instead of the 55 L Plus, so it will carry one set of ski or snowboard boots, while the Plus can carry two pairs. For an additional $45 CAN, the Plus gives you more room—roughly 7 cm more height, 9 cm more width, and 2.8 cm more depth—but it does weigh a bit more, adding about 0.56 lb.

Kudos to Osprey for creating such a well thought-out and durable Ski & Snowboard Boot Backpack and Roller Bag. The new Mountain Bound bags are surprisingly sturdy and confidence-inspiring, which makes them well suited for both international trips and day-to-day missions to the local resort. I’ve been using the Mountain Bound Ski & Snowboard Boot Backpack Plus daily for several months now, and I’m impressed with how much it can hold. The 55 L volume is enough for my helmet and goggles, gloves, ski jacket, and one pair of ski boots.
Fitting two pairs of ski or snowboard boots into the Mountain Bound Plus is possible, but it’s a stretch—melted snow from the top pair will inevitably drip onto the boots on the bottom, which isn’t ideal. I much prefer to carry a single pair of boots and use the extra room for other gear. In practice, I’ve ended up using the bag a little differently than the intended layout: I store my ski boots and helmet/goggles in the main compartment, and then stash my gloves, ski socks, and hardshell jacket in the top “helmet” compartment. This configuration, for me, optimizes the available space and keeps wet items better separated from dry ones. While the pack is roomy, I do think the overall width could use another inch to better accommodate boots without feeling as cramped.
I’ve also managed to get the Mountain Bound Ski & Snowboard Roller Bag out on a few trips and found it to be just as robust and logically laid out as the Boot Backpack Plus. It protected my skis along with some extra gear I tucked inside to help keep checked baggage costs down. The water-resistant interior fabric prevented melting snow from saturating the entire bag, and the ability to carry one or two pairs of skis adds welcome versatility. With only one pair of skis inside, there’s still room for clothes or other accessories you need to transport. The padded construction kept everything safe, though I would have liked to see a padded ski divider and a dedicated sleeve for ski poles. The external zippered pocket is handy for small, easy-access items, but a more secure inner pocket would also be a nice touch.
The biggest advantage of the Mountain Bound Ski & Snowboard Roller Bag is its non-rigid design, which allows it to compress for easy storage when not in use. Hard-sided or fully rigid bags don’t pack down and can be a pain to store in small hotel rooms or apartments—this is not an issue with the Mountain Bound Roller.
Overall, if you are in the market for a Ski & Snowboard Roller Bag and Boot Backpack, the new Mountain Bound collection from Osprey is well worth a look. Like most things from Osprey, these bags are well built, carry comfortably, and do an excellent job of protecting your ski and snowboard gear wherever your next adventure takes you.
