      Mountain Hardwear Boundary Ridge
      Jacket and Bib

The Boundary Ridge Jacket and Bibs are designed for high-volume, high-output skiing and snowboarding in the toughest conditions. Mountain Hardwear’s most durable, fully featured ski jacket and bibs are inspired by cat trips, heli drops and deep turns. The focus of this kit is clearly on downhill backcountry travel or resort-based skiing and riding. This is where the jacket and bibs thrive.

Featuring 3-layer Gore-Tex with strategic reinforcement and wet-weather protection, the Mountain Hardwear Boundary Ridge Gore-Tex Jacket and Bib are designed for demanding winter conditions.

Mountain Hardwear Boundary Ridge Gore-Tex Jacket and Bib

The Boundary Ridge jacket features a helmet-compatible hood with three-way drawcord adjustment.

Two large zippered chest pockets with internal gear organization and two lower hand pockets with a hook and loop flap closure and zipper offer plenty of room for jacket-based equipment or snacks. While two oversized internal drop pockets make room for gloves or goggles. Integrated RECCO avalanche rescue reflectors are included in both the jacket and bibs.

The Boundary Ridge bibs reflect a traditional bib design with a single 3/4 length side zipper for entry. The stretch-woven upper panel allows for freedom of movement and a long side zip for easy on and off and venting on the right side. The left side vents with mesh backing.

      Verdict:

The Mountain Hardwear Boundary Ridge GORE-TEX® Jacket and Bibs perform as advertised - they are made of top-quality, durable fabric and well-designed to meet the demands of the intended users. However, this is where the caveat lies. The intended user - as described by Mountain Hardwear - is not engaged primarily in uphill travel. According to MH, the Boundary Ridge jacket and bibs are “inspired by cat trips, heli drops, and sidecountry storm laps.” In other words, downhill in the backcountry.

It seems harsh to penalize a product in a review for not performing at a high standard for a task it wasn’t designed for. However, if your primary direction of travel is uphill, this kit will likely leave you wanting more.

On the other hand, if your primary direction of travel is downhill, this kit is designed with you in mind - and it delivers. Storm days sliding downhill through deep snow is where this kit thrives. You’ll stay warm and dry even during a wet-snow day on Mount Baker or riding the North Shore Mountains in B.C.

Although the jacket and bibs are both made of the same durable fabric and both designed to work together for the same purpose, I found that the bibs significantly outperformed the jacket - on the up and downhill. This started with the fit. While the bibs fit perfectly (size large) the jacket was significantly oversized for me. I’m 200lbs and 6’0” tall and wear a size large in all my other ski clothing. I was swimming in the large-size jacket and had to size it down to a medium (*this may be a personal fit issue since other reviews I have read online indicate that the fit is true to size). The jacket’s chest pockets are well placed but the lower hand pockets are unnecessary and would be at least partially blocked when wearing a pack. For uphill travel, I would have liked the powder skirt to be removable and the lower hem to sit higher towards the waist, rather than down on the upper thigh. The low hem and drawstring impeded movement when travelling uphill, especially if I needed to make a larger step.

The bibs were a Goldilocks fit for me - not too big, not too small, and an athletic trim without being too tight. The high stretch-mesh chest and wide suspender straps were comfortable and warm. I would happily wear the bibs as my first choice pants at a ski area or if I were guiding mechanized skiing. However, if I was going on a long ski tour, or if the temperature was above -5C on a backcountry tour, the bibs would likely be too warm for me.

The Mountain Hardwear Boundary Ridge GORE-TEX® Jacket and Bibs offer excellent durability and features for the downhill-oriented skier or rider. If your skis are pointed downhill more than 90% of the time - the Boundary Ridge jacket and bibs offer high performance in even the toughest winter conditions.

      CONS:

Mountain Hardwear Boundary Ridge Gore-Tex Jacket

      • Low hem drawcord limited upper leg movement during uphill travel.
      • Powder skirt is not removable.
      • Lower hand pockets are blocked when wearing a pack.

      • Fabric is bulky and not easily packable.
