Merino wool offers some great benefits, but Ibex really pushes the envelope by calling their new tee GOAT, “the greatest tee we’ve ever made”. So, earlier this month we did 7 National Park Backcountry hikes covering 110 km and 4,440 meters of elevation and I wore the IBEX GOAT short sleeve crew t-shirt on every hike (and didn’t wash it between hikes) to test out IBEX’s claim.
A small herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn Sheep Rams stopped to say hello on the way to Wilcox Lake, one of the hikes we tested the IBex GOAT Tee on.
The GOAT Tee is a direct successor to the Journey Tee. The GOAT still has an 89% merino wool and 11% nylon blend but has an improved silhouette and fit. For the men’s GOAT tee is slightly longer and a bit roomier in the hips, while the women’s version is a slightly shorter length. IBEX also upgraded the seams and stitching with low-profile saddle stitching and offset shoulder seams that make it even more comfortable for wearing a backpack.
The highlight of the GOAT tee is Ibex’s ‘Weightless Wool. They wrap the ultra-thin merino fibres around a nylon filament to provide extra support to the weaker Merino fibres. Which provides for a more lightweight and durable Merino wool material. Additionally this corespinning process keeps Merino as the only fibre next to skin, allowing nylon to increase the longevity of this all-season fabric without impacting its breathability or odour resistance. Weightless Wool combines the best of human innovation with the best of what nature has to offer.
Most of the hikes we did were pretty good workouts and I sweated a lot. The temperature was seasonally warm for the areas we were hiking and ranged from a high of 24 C (75 F) to a low of 4 C (40 F).
On Warm days when I only wore the GOAT Tee it was quick to dry when we stopped for a break. And on the colder or windier days were I wore it as a base layer it still pulled moisture away from my torso and kept me very comfortable. I wore the GOAT as a base layer under a long sleeve shirt on colder days and under a hard shell on a day where it rained on and off. In addition to keeping me comfortable during these hikes at the end of the day the tee did not smell and it kept its shape. I was pleasantly surprised at how each morning I went to put it on; it didn’t look or smell like I had wore it on a long hike the previous days.
After a gruelling 110 km backcountry test without a single wash, the Ibex GOAT Tee proved it's a worthy contender for its title. It excels where it matters most for backcountry adventures: comfort, performance, and durability. The Merino-nylon blend is a triumph, offering incredible odour resistance and moisture management that kept me comfortable in a wide range of temperatures, both as a base layer and on its own. The improved fit and backpack-friendly seams are thoughtful, functional upgrades over its predecessor. While "greatest of all time" is subjective, this tee's ability to look and smell fresh after days of intense use is nothing short of remarkable. It's a top-tier choice for any serious hiker or traveller.
