    • Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket and Bib Pants

Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket and Bib Pants

Helly Hansen has always made functional apparel that’s durable and looks good and the Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket and Bib Pants are no exception. The Odin line is designed for skiing with the focus being on backcountry rather than resort but they work well for both. The Odin Professional Collection is comprised of almost twenty products for men and women from hard and softshell jackets and pants along with Insulating layers and gloves. This line of apparel is named after one of the most complex and enigmatic gods from Norse mythology who is sometimes called the all-father or wanderer. He is said to be the god of wisdom, poetry, death, divination and magic. High expectations for Jacket and Pant combo with that name but the Odin Mountain 3L Shells don’t disappoint.

Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket and Bib Pants

The Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket and Bib Pants are one nice backcountry/resort kit which are designed to work together in any type of weather.

Both the Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket and Bib Pants are made with Helly Hansen’s proprietary Helly Tech Professional Fabric which is designed to keep you dry, warm and comfortable no matter how bad the weather conditions are. The microporous membrane is bonded to a durable woven backer and is waterproof and breathable with a 20k/20k rating. It pulls moisture away from your body and allows heat and moisture to pass through it when you're active yet keeps the weather out thanks to the fully taped and welded seams.

Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket

The Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket has many features you’d want for backcountry adventures such as the removable, low-profile powder skirt with aluminum latches and an internal stash pocket on one side.

The other side features a zippered pocket for storing more valuable items such as a wallet or phone.

On the outside, there are two handwarmer pockets and a zippered Napoleon pocket where I like to keep my camera/phone ready for easy retreival.

The helmet-compatible hood features three adjustment points to allow you to snug it down during inclement weather without impeding your ability to see your surroundings.

The adjustable cuffs are burly and help form a tight seal around your gloves so snow and wind can’t get in.

Built-in pit zips allow you to dump extra heat in a hurry should you need to with out having to remove the jacket.
Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket
A great companion to the Odin Jacket is the Mountain 3L Shell Bib Pants which are very complementary in design. Like the Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket, the pants also use Helly Hansen’s proprietary Helly Tech Professional waterproof/breathable fabric, however, the upper bib portion of the pants are made from a lightweight softshell fabric and include a built-in zippered pocket for a wallet, phone or even a transceiver thanks to the built-in clip. The suspenders are removable and ensure the pants don’t ride down on you even when wearing a pack.

There are three additional pockets found in the thigh area of the pants with the right side pocket designed to safely carry a transceiver and the two on the left for other small items.

Leg zippers allow for ventilation when heat builds up, the left one running from the knee to the hip and the one on the right running right up to the waist to facilitate easy on and off.

At the leg hem, you’ll find built-in gaiters and durable kick patches to fend off ski cuts, as well as a Recco reflector integrated into the left leg.

    Verdict:

Most people wear hard shells at the resort given their bomber protection against wind, snow and rain. In the backcountry, however, softshells are often worn due to their ability to repel light wind and moisture along with their superior breathability. If you have to only choose one however, then hard-shells win every time thanks to the higher level of protection and durability they provide.

Both the Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket and Bib Pants use Helly Hansen’s proprietary HELLY TECH Professional 3-layer fabric which is as waterproof and breathable as any name brand fabric out there. It breathes well and protects you from wind and moisture, should you need to dump heat fast the Bib Pants have generous thigh zips and the jacket built-in pit zips which are essential for ski touring.

I tested the Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket and Bib Pants on several long ski tours and found they performed as promised and fit well overall. I would have liked the option to zip out the soft-shell bib much like the Odin Jacket powder skirt’s ability to be removed, as I found it redundant to carry around features like these that you don't need every day as they add to overall bulk and weight. With the longer cut of the Odin Jacket and the hem adjustment, I found that snow rarely got between the jacket and pants so I found the powder skirt and bib not really required, but for in-bounds skiing, this would be a different story.

No matter the kind of skier you are, resort or backcountry, the generous number of pockets was appreciated and the ability to carry your transceiver in either a chest or thigh configuration was a huge plus.  The two interior pockets on the jacket were essential for carrying my phone well away from my transceiver and yet still inside the jacket where my body heat could keep it warm. To make the Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket even better in the pocket department, however, I would like to see internal skin pockets included. Not a deal-breaker but a nice to have.

The Odin Mountain 3L Shell Jacket and Bib Pants offer up all the features you’d ever want for resort skiing and some of those you’d appreciate in the backcountry too. The versatility that this kit offers is what makes it so great, it blurs the line between resort and backcounty so you have the choice to do either with equal comfort and confidence.

If softshells are more your thing then be sure to check out our review of the Helly Hansen Odin Mountain Hybrid Softshell Pants and Jacket found here.
