Outdoor Tech Grizzly Portable Power Station & Solar Panel

We took Outdoor Tech's Grizzly Portable Power Station & Solar Panel on an off-grid RV camping trip at Glacier National Park to test out its capabilities for camping off-grid… way off-grid. The Grizzly Portable Power Station comes with ample output options and some good power input options. We also tested the Dawn 40W solar panel.

The Outdoor Tech's Grizzly Portable Power Station weighs 7 lbs and the Dawn Solar Panel panel weighs 4 lbs. Both are made from very rugged material and easy to carry.

The battery pack has an enclosed pure sine wave inverter. Pure sine wave inverters are important as they are compatible and safe to use with any appliance. So, we didn’t hesitate to test it out with our BlendTec Blender to make two protein smoothies. Each smoothie only depleted about 4% of the batter power.

We also used it to recharge our smart watches, cell phones and power a laptop for half an hour. This depleted the Grizzly Portable Power Station by another 20%. At this rate we would easily have 3 days of portable power supply.

All this power, however, comes at a cost and that is of the recharging of the 20 amp-hour (Ah) battery. We were camping at Glacier National Park Illecillewaet Campground, which has no electricity at the campsite so our only way to recharge the Grizzly was via the solar panels. The campsites, although very nice are mostly shaded in the trees and at best gets only four to six hours of direct sunshine per day (if it wasn’t clouded over). The one day we left the solar panel out and attached to the power bank we were able to get 21% of the batter recharged. Which given our usage we would be able to keep ourselves in smoothies and keep our devices charged for the 5 days we were there.

We also did not have the solar panel in the optimal position. Since we were going to be off hiking, we left the solar panel on top of our truck box cover and had the power station locked inside the box. So, the solar panels were not in an optimal position, but still provided 20% battery recharge while we were off hiking.
    Solar Panel Flat
To further test out the solar charging when we got home, we waited for a clear sunny day and setup the panels and battery bank in our backyard that has a nice southern mostly unimpeded exposure. We left the solar panel up for 5 hours of direct sunlight and were able to recharge the battery from zero to 60%. So, it seems reasonable if you had the solar panels in a good position that they could easily be recharged in the 8 hours. Outdoor Tech does indicate that solar charging can take 8+ hours to fully recharge the Battery Bank. The Plus (+) considers the issues of variable cloud cover and that as the sun moves across the sky you are not going to always have the panels optimally aligned.

    Verdict:

There are quite a few similar battery banks on the market, but I was really impressed with how much power came in such a portable box and how rugged both the Grizzly Portable Power Sation and Dawn Solar Panel is. I liked that all of the Solar Panel cables came in a little pouch attached to the back of the panel, so there was no searching for the right cables.
I would have liked to have seen a little more capacity in the Solar Panels, but at the end of the day they did provide us with enough recharging power for our needs.
It is too heavy for backpacking, but a great addition to car camping or your base camp.

    PROS:

    • Rugged (both Battery Pack and Solar Panels)
    • Portable
    • Lots of Output options
    • Solar Panel easy to use

    CONS:

    • Slow to recharge
    • Limited power input options
