    Burton Ion Boa Snowboard Boots

The Burton Ion Boa® Snowboard Boot is Burton’s top shelf all mountain Boa boot. The dual closure system is just one of the many features that make this boot stand above the rest of Burtons line. Stacked for performance and made with technical materials, these boots will keep your feet happy and give you the response required to shred in any condition.

The Dual-zone Focus Boa Coiler Closure System offers the best fit in the midfoot area of the shell compared to other Boa systems. This is achieved by improvements in the midfoot lace path and controlled by the Boa High-Power reel featuring a 4:1 gear ratio and a cushioned grip. The addition of the premium Coiler feature makes the system that much faster by quickly taking up any slack lace. The laces are New England Ropes, and are the same stuff used by rescue teams and fire fighters. These natural fibre ropes ensure that your Boa system will be durable and rugged, and are backed by a lifetime warranty.

One BOA has internal laces the other external.

The Firm Flex PowerUP Tongue offers 1:1 flex to response for greater rebound and durability. The dual density construction maximizes both flex and a firm rebound to create a balanced response while you ride.

The Life Liner is made of lightweight foam that offers a relaxed feel while remaining both responsive and durable. The Ultralon Performance Foam is known for its thermoformability, resistance to packing out, and for minimal water absorption. The foam is then enhanced with DRYRIDE Heat Cycle™ inner-lining technology that increases warmth and moisture wicking abilities. Interwoven thermally activated carbon threads capture body heat and then radiate and reflect that heat inward, all while wicking moisture away from the feet.

Ankle support is provided by the Tuff Cuff which increases heel hold and inner cuff stability. Heel to toe flexibility remains uninhibited while medial and lateral ankle support is enhanced.

The outsole of this boot is enhanced by Shrinkage™ Footprint Reduction Technology and the low profile EST® Optimized Midsole. The lower profile and reduced ramp angle creates a lower center of gravity and improves board feel while reducing weight. B3 Gel inserts make-up for any lost cushioning. The overall footprint has been reduced with Shrinkage™ technology to reduce weight and help eliminate toe drag. The outsole also contains recycled content to further reduce this boots footprint.

The shell of the boot features pressure relief panels where the straps cross over the boot. These cushioned areas distribute pressure evenly so you can get your bindings as tight as you want without cutting off circulation. An internal gusset is also included in the shell so that the lower portion of the boot is remains snow-free.

The cushioning found in this boot has been designed with comfort in mind and combines a few technologies to make it happen. The ESS support shank adds arch support and reduces fatigue and prevents arch collapse on hard impacts. AUTOCANT cushioning is constructed with dual-density EVA (ethylene-vinyl-acetate) foam that promotes a more natural, relaxed foot position and directly improves board control. ReBounce cushioning is found within the shell and adds more impact protection directly below the foot. Extra warmth is added by the addition of a heat-reflective material that keeps the cushioning soft and effective, thus creating consistent performance. Sleeping Bag Reflective Foil also reflects heat back to the feet.

    Verdict:

The Ion Boa snowboard boot from Burton is a top of the line boot that won't let you down. Stacked with features, these boots are an aggressive, responsive boot that holds its own when charging across mountains. The dual Bao set up is the only way to do Boa, as it keeps the boot tight from toe to cuff.

My only concern with the Boa system is that of breakage. If any part of the system were to break while deep in the backcountry, it would be a day wrecker for sure. The addition of the New England Ropes is a welcome change to the original metal cable, as if it were to break, it could at least be tied back together. Call me old school, but I prefer a boot with laces.

Another great feature is the sole of the boot; not only is it low profile to get you closer to the board, but it is made with shock-absorbing technology and even contains recycled materials. The Shrinkage technology is great as well as it keeps the bulk of a boot down and will reduce toe drag associated with the bulk of snowboard boots.

Bottom line? If you’re looking for a Boa system boot that will cushion your feet while charging aggressive lines, this is the boot for you.

The perfect companion to the Burton Ion Boa Snowboard Boots is the Burton Family Tree Dump Truck Snowboard and the Burton Genesis EST Bindings.
