      Best Mid Layers of 2020

A good Mid layer must be thin enough to wear under a shell and large enough to wear over a base layer while keeping you warm and protected from wind and snow. The challenge is to ensure the proper balance between warmth, breathability and packability. Most Mid Layers use some form of active insulation which is designed to breathe and allow excess heat to escape so you don’t overheat during aerobic activities like backcountry skiing. This active insulation is paired with a breathable shell fabric to further enhance breathability without eliminating the ability to buffet the wind and snow. Some Mid Layers, however, are more like enhanced base layers which look and feel like a warmer base layer, only thicker, warmer and with a full zipper on the front.

For this comparison review, we put several Mid Layers through the paces and rated them on fit/mobility, warmth/breathability, packability, features and overall value. We've highlighted the best of what we tested below so that you get a concise overview of only the best Mid Layers out there. Several factors were considered when rating each jacket, namely the jacket's price, the fabric and insulation used, weight and warmth along with features such as the number and variety of pockets, hood adjustability and more. Read on to discover what we consider the best Mid Layers on the market.

      Mammut Aconcagua Light

Mammut’s Aconcagua Light is a mid-layer that is designed to be worn under a shell since it has minimal bulk, flat seams and no hood. The full-length zip qualifies it as a jacket yet its lightweight, comfortable and stretchable material makes it feel more like a super warm base layer. The Aconcagua Light provides superior breathability and active moisture-wicking properties along with thumb loops, underarm gussets and a chest zipper pocket for storage of smaller items. This technical mid-layer gets its name from the 6,962-meter peak in the Andes where high-performance apparel is a must—but this doesn’t mean this mid-layer is confined to the mountains as it wears well just about anywhere.

      Cotopaxi Monte Hybrid Jacket

Ski touring is all about stop and go, between transitions from climbing to skiing and mandatory rest breaks and lunch you can easily get cold when not moving and too hot when you overexert. Cotopaxi’s Monte Hybrid Jacket is designed to ditch excess heat when you’re moving and keep you warm and comfortable when you’re at a standstill. By using lightweight Polartec Alpha active insulation, the Monte Hybrid keeps you warm but breathes when you need it. The active insulation is ideally suited to high-output activities in cold weather like snowshoeing, backcountry skiing, and winter trail running. The 100% recycled polyester shell is soft and also breathable while the recycled polyester stretch fleece in the sleeves and side panels further improves moisture management while optimising freedom of movement.

      Dynafit Speed Insulation Hooded Jacket

As the name suggests, Dynafit’s Speed Insulation Hooded Jacket is made to keep you warm while on the go. This lightweight, well-insulated jacket uses a combination of PrimaLoft Silver Active and Clo insulation with the majority of the shell fabric being Dynashell Ultra Light Coated Miniripstop 28. These combine to provide a warm comfy feel which breathes well and does not impede range of motion. With the outer fabric being water and wind-resistant, you can also wear the Speed Insulation Hooded Jacket as an outer layer. With reflective details, a hood visor to improve the field of view and internal stretch bands located at the waist and sleeves to keep cold drafts out, the Speed Insulation Hooded Jacket has plenty of features. Built for speed in the mountains while keeping you warm but not overheating is what this Mid Layer is all about.

      Rab Alpha Flux

While not as warm as the other mid-layers tested, the Rab Alpha Flux still provides a surprising amount of warmth given its lightweight minimal design. This is due to the use of Polartec Alpha Direct 90 insulation in the main body and outer arms of the jacket. Body mapping places Alpha Direct Insulation where it’s needed most and less insulated, more breathable, abrasion-resistant, lightweight nylon everywhere else. This provides an unparalleled range of motion in a slim fitting jacket for high output activities like ski touring and mountaineering. Arc'teryx Proton LT

Backcountry Skiing Canada Gear of the Year

The Arc'teryx Proton LT not only landed in the top place out of all the Mid Layer Jackets we tested but it has also been awarded our prestigious Gear of the Year Award as well. Because it has all the features one could ever want along with outstanding quality and clean design, the Arc'teryx Proton LT was a natural choice for this award.

      The Backcountry Skiing Canada Team.

The Arc'teryx Proton LT is a self-regulating mid-layer that uses the companies breathable synthetic insulation which is called Coreloft. It is lightweight (hence the LT in the jacket’s name), breathable and yet surprisingly durable. The air-permeable fabrics and insulation mean that excess heat and moisture can pass through, making the Arc'teryx Proton LT ideal for high output activities while the insulated hood provides additional warmth on colder days. Arc'teryx used Fortius Air 20 face fabric on the Proton LT because it is reportedly over 60 times more durable in abrasion tests than industry-standard fabrics. This hard wearing durability means the Proton LT can take whatever you throw at it.

      Verdict:

      Best Fit / Mobility
Mid Layers typically use flexible face fabrics and synthetic insulation in order to not compromise mobility, however, some are more accommodating in this area than others. The use of underarm gussets and flexible side panels also help increase some mid layer’s flexibility over others. The type of synthetic insulation used (or lack thereof) also greatly influences the mid layer's overall mobility and stretch.

Each of the Mid Layers tested was a size medium and I weigh 180lb and am 6'1" tall to give you a frame of reference. Only the Mammut Aconcagua Light fit was too tight for comfort whereas the Marmot Novus Hoody went the other way and was a little roomy. Best overall fit and mobility had to go to the Arc'teryx Proton LT, Black Diamond First Light Stretch Hoody and Patagonia Nano Air Hoody.

      Best Warmth to Weight
All Mid-Layers use what is called ‘Active Insulation’ which means they are designed to be worm when the wearer is active and producing a lot of heat which needs to be vented in order to prevent its build-up which eventually induces sweating. Active Insulation is always synthetic and never down as synthetic insulation is better at transporting water vapour, staying dry, being flexible and breathing. Synthetic insulation doesn’t have the same packability as down, however, so the more that is used the heavier and more bulky the mid-layer becomes. While this extra insulation will keep you warmer it also impedes breathability when compared to thinner mid-layers such as the Rab Alpah Flux, Outdoor Research Refuge Air Hooded Jacket and Mammut Aconcagua Light.

Overall the mid-layers with the best warmth to breathability ratio were the Arc'teryx Proton LT, Black Diamond First Light Stretch Hoody, Helly Hansen Lifa Loft Stretch Insulator Jacket and Patagonia’s Nano Air Hoody. These were also coincidentally the top-rated mid-layers overall.

      Best Packability
Unlike a down jacket which spends most of the time in your pack, a Mid Layer is an essential insulation layer in winter which spends most of the time being worn. Even when partaking in aerobic activities you typically wear a mid-layer in winter unless it is either over insulated or the weather is calm and warm. All but three of the mid-layers tested provided substantial amounts of insulation which would easily keep you warm on the windiest of days. The Rab Alpha Flux, Outdoor Research Refuge Air Hooded Jacket and Mammut Aconcagua Light, however, are what I would consider on the lighter side of mid-layers, so if you run hot then these would be the best ones for you. Although these are all considered jackets due to their full-length front zips, they do blur the line between base-layer and mid-layer which is also what makes then the most packable of all the mid-layers tested.

      Most Features
The top two ranked Mid Layers had the most features of any jackets tested, these being the Arc'teryx Proton LT and Black Diamond First Light Stretch Hoody. They possessed all the features one could ever want which included: three pockets - two handwarmer pockets and one Napoleon pocket (note that some mid-layers tested did have an internal Napoleon pocket), an adjustable hood and more.

      Best Value
Value is defined as the benefit something provides relative to its price. With a high benefit and a low price being the ideal, and the lowest price not always meaning it's the best product. Given these parameters, the Marmot Novus Hoody was ranked the best value with its $250 price tag and endless features. A close second and third were the Black Diamond First Light Stretch Hoody and the Outdoor Research Refuge Air Hooded Jacket. While we did test a few higher-end jackets, however, their price was so high that the quality and features didn’t keep pace and therefore their overall relative value suffered.
