Scott Coulter Helmet

New for 2013/14, the Scott Coulter helmet is targeted as a slightly more affordable version of their high-end Symbol, but the features, fit and look of the Coulter shouldn’t be underestimated. While there is some interesting, brain-friendly technology under this lid, the bottom line is that its low-profile look and angles make it one of the more attractive on the market…and not looking like a bobble-head is a win right from the start.

On the safety side, the Scott Coulter features “PC in-mold” construction, which means the outer shell of polycarbonate material is fused with the helmet’s impact absorbent foam liner, resulting in a lightweight outer shell. The “Micro Rotary Adjustment System” uses a dial in the back to ensure a snug fit and features an automatic lock. The fit system is built on a flexible structure for comfort.

The inside line of the helmet is fleece-like and comfortable on the head. There is one point of concern here in terms of long-term durability/comfort when exposed to days of sweat, but we didn’t use the Coulter long enough to confirm. That said, the Scott “Active S-Vent” system works well to vent warm air off the head while skiing with an easily via a back-of-the-head adjustment.

The Scott “G-Vent System” has intake vents in the helmet visor just above the goggle, which pulls air through the goggle frame to reduce fogging. We paired the Scott goggle with the excellent Scott LCG goggle and found the G-Vent system effective and fog-free.

Verdict:

The Scott Coulter fits the bill for a reasonably priced helmet that offers all the features one would expect. It is comfortable, has good venting and is a good looker. If safety is paramount, and like us you fancy the styling of the Coulter, at $40 more the Scott Symbol comes with their proprietary “MIPS” system to further protect the brain from rotational forces.
