Holiday Gift Guide: Top gifts $100+

Holiday Gift GuideThe present-giving aspect of the holidays for some is more than half the fun. They think of what special little item to give waaay in advance. We here at Backcountry Skiing Canada are not those people. We tend to procrastinate and scramble at the last minute—hoping that the presents we buy for our loved ones will be appreciated. We are also all about giving, and getting, gear. And the occasional book.

It’s in the spirit of this procrastination (and holiday giving, of course) that we provide you with our first-ever Holiday Gift Guide. We’ll break it into three categories. Less than $50, between $50 and $100 and more than $100. We’ll roll it out over a few days.

      Top Gifts $100+
I’m not sure about you, reader, but this kind of present is reserved for extreme loved ones. Mates, best best buds, etc. This carefully curated collection features the kinds of things that might cause recipients to break down in tears of gratitude. Always fun to watch. We resisted the temptation to go too far beyond a C-note. It’s not like you’ll be giving anyone a new pair of touring boots (other than yourself).

      Gregory Targhee 32 Ski Pack
We did a video review of an earlier iteration of the Targhee 32 from Gregory. We loved it then, and now, since it has been further tweaked,  we love it even more. The large version fits me perfectly and the pack comes in three sizes to accommodate anyone on your list. It’s fairly low profile and has the cinch straps to adjust the volume. The top pocket is massive and works for more than just goggles. There’s also a new insulated shoulder strap/ sleeve to stop your hydration program from freezing up. A lifesaver.

We didn’t). The Plasma 1000 Down Vest is light and compact and built to keep your special someone warm all winter long.

Just a FYI  The OR skyward jacket is now 25% off that CDN $450,  in that hotbed of all things skiing Sudbury, Onterrible...so I imagine it is elsewhere too. I just got it today, based upon the suggestion here and the backpacker Winter Gear award where it was tested while  backcountry skiing in BC (Spearhead Traverse) Haven't tried it yet and since I am still on crutches, it's unlikely I will be giving it a pow trial this year :-( I am looking forward to trying it with my fantastic OR soft-shell pants that I picked up from Brad(thank you for introducing me to soft-shell!) in Nelson in 2014 (before the worst ski season there in many, many years :-(   )

Glad the soft shells are working for you Ian, sorry to hear you are laid up but hopefully back on skis for this season. The Outdoor Research Skyward jacket is a great waterproof/breathable layer that feels like a soft shell. Good score on that one!
