Best Time for Wapta Traverse?!
Hey,
We are looking for a possible traverse/hut trip and we were drooling over the Wapta. We are looking at potentially doing it in January. Any thoughts?

2014-10-31 23:34:45I've completed the traverse twice now and both times in April. Better more stable snow with crevasses covered (for the most part). Sunny skies are more likely and warmer temps, not to mention longer days to get some turn in. Both times I've had just below zero temps with sun every day. Just my 2¢!

I've done the Wapta Travrerse, starting at Peyto Lake and finishing at Wapta Lake, about a dozen times since the mid-eighties. Done it in February, March, April and May... but never in January.
The reason: cold, dark and thin coverage over cravasses.
However, looking on the up-side, it probably won't be crowded.
