As winter creeps in, this is a good time remind ourselves of the dangers that backcountry skiing present and what we can do to prepare now. This is the time to book that AST1 or AST2 course for early winter and to start practicing up on those rusty transceiver techniques or maybe its time to re-read that avalanche book to ensure you have conveyor shovelling method dialled?

While the statistics below are from the Colorado Avalanche Center for the 2013/2014 season their message is clear no matter where you reside and ride. Have a look, give things a thought and perhaps start to plan now for those first days in the backcountry.
