      Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress

Luno was founded by Peter Ducato seven years ago with the goal of making car camping more comfortable. They produce camping gear and accessories to transform car camping into the new "vanlife" for those of us who don’t want to own or can’t afford a tricked-out van. Luno's mission is to provide premium, practical, durable, and innovative gear while supporting the outdoor community and reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing. In this review, we’re going to look at the Luno Life sleep ecosystem, which centers around their new Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress with Head Support Bridge System, as well as add-ons like the Luno Memory Foam Topper, Luno Packable Camp Pillow and Pillowcase, and the Upcycled Luno Firewood Carrier Utility Mat.

Having been a long-time user (since the beginning) of Luno’s innovative car camping gear, I was excited to see that their flagship Air Vehicle Mattress 2.0 had been upgraded to the Air Pro version. Along with this, there is now a long list of additions you can purchase to make your car camping sleep experience rival that of your bed at home.

The Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress transforms your vehicle into a cozy sleeping space for two campers and has been updated with these features:
      • Innovative Solo Zipper, allowing you to adapt the mattress for solo adventures.
      • Patented Head Support Bridge Attachments to maximize sleep space in the vehicle. This feature creates additional storage space near the head of the mattress while maintaining structural support, so you can keep your essentials within reach without sacrificing comfort.
      • Coated fabric on the bottom of the mattress for increased durability.
      • Smaller, more powerful 12V pump.
      • Reduced pack size by 15%.

      Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress

Every AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress is designed to accommodate the wheel wells in your specific vehicle and is custom-fit so you utilize 100% of your sleeping space. The AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress is available in several sizes for cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans.

      Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress
Luno includes a newly designed plug-in 12V pump, which is now smaller and more powerful.
      Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress

One of the biggest upgrades Luno has integrated into their new AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress is CloudSupport Technology, which is their proprietary construction that uses a grid of body-mapped O-beams. This design provides more support for the specific areas of your body that need it most (think hips, feet, and shoulders) and creates a much more cradled experience. The Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress is made with a 300D Oxford Laminated fabric that is very tough and durable. It can stand up to just about anything, including pets and their sharp claws, so that Rover can snuggle up with you.

      Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress

To provide more storage space in your vehicle and reduce the overall weight and bulk of the new AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress, Luno has eliminated the need for inflatable cubes. These filled the space in the footwell of your vehicle so that the mattress would lie flat. Instead, Luno has patented a new system that uses a Head Support Bridge that frees up space in the footwell (under the head of the mattress) for footwear or items you want close at hand.

      Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress
The Head Support Bridge attaches securely to the headrest of your vehicle's seats and is easy to install and adjust thanks to the metal hook and loop ladder which is sewn into the webbing.
      Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress
The lower half of the system attaches to the mattress with adjustable, heavy-duty webbing straps. These connect to welded loops on the bottom of the mattress and provide enough tension to stabilize and support the head of the mattress, creating a comfortable, level sleeping platform.
      Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress

Another new feature that makes solo sleeping in your vehicle much easier is the centre zipper that attaches the two mattresses together. This allows you to unzip the mattresses and leave one at home, reducing the packed volume of your Luno kit and freeing up valuable space inside your vehicle.

      Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress

If you are not a fan of sleeping on an air mattress and want the added plushness of foam, Luno has you covered with their new AIR+FOAM Vehicle Mattress as well. This self-inflating foam mattress can be topped up from approximately 75% of its volume to completely full with the included inflation bag, if you prefer a firmer sleep. While the AIR+FOAM Mattress is a little more expensive and doesn’t pack down as small as the AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress, it does offer a next-level sleep experience.

      Luno Firewood Carrier Utility Mat

Luno has created an upcycling program called Project ReRoam, which takes mattress materials that are considered waste and repurposes them by transforming them into practical, long-lasting car camping accessories. This repurposing of materials diverts them from the landfill and creates some creative new products, such as their Firewood Carrier Utility Mat. Like the AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress, the Firewood Carrier Utility Mat is super durable and versatile. Thanks to its heavy-duty carry handles, it makes carrying firewood or just about anything a snap. It also works as a clean/dry wetsuit changing mat, shoe mat, or even a mobile dog bed.

While not new, the Luno Fitted Mattress Sheet, Luno Car Window Screens and Luno Camping String Lights are three additional Luno products you might want to consider to up your car camping game.
      Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress
The Fitted Mattress Sheet will help protect your mattress from dirt, grime and dog hair. It is super easy to place over your mattress thanks to the customized size and form, which has corner attachment points built in.

The Luno Car Window Screens are a must-have for any car camper as they provide increased privacy and keep out any insects and bugs while allowing you to keep the vehicle's interior temperature comfortable.

      Verdict:

I’ve been using the new Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress along with their Memory Foam Topper and the Packable Camp Pillow in my 2022 Subaru Crosstrek. This new set up has been tested on several weekend road trips as well as a month long cross Canada trip that saw us living out of the car along the way. Here are my thoughts on the new Luno products and how they performed.

Luno has upgraded its previous mattress (which I used for several years) with an all-new design that no longer needs an inflatable cube to support the head of the mattress. This is a game changer. With the new AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress’s Head Support Bridge Attachment, you now get to use all that functional space in the footwell of your vehicle that was otherwise wasted before. This is an ideal location to store your footwear, items you need close at hand, or things that can’t be stored outside, such as food. The fact that the Head Support Bridge Attachment is also adjustable means that you can easily select the perfect height for your desired sleep setup. The elimination of these inflatable cubes also means that the overall volume of the Luno Mattress is smaller and lighter. The new mattress fabric also helps with this; it is still just as tough but now 15% more packable than before.

Another huge improvement with the new AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress that I use on a regular basis is the ability to unzip the two mattresses so that you can now camp solo and save even more weight and space inside your vehicle by leaving one of the mattresses at home. Prior to this, with the previous version, you had to fold one inflated mat under the other, which wasn't a big deal, but this new system is so much more efficient and easy to use.

While the previous Air Vehicle Mattress 2.0 and the new AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress are very comfortable to sleep on, Luno’s new Memory Foam Topper and Packable Camp Pillow take car camping to the next level. With these two add-ons, sleeping in your vehicle becomes as comfy as sleeping in your bed at home. It’s hard to describe just how plush my setup is now with the new Memory Foam Topper and Packable Camp Pillow, but trust me—it’s worth the upgrade.

Given all the new features of the new AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress and new products available from Luno, it’s a great time to forgo your tent and instead just sleep in your vehicle. It’ll be more comfortable, convenient and safe in addition to saving you a lot of money on find camp sites each night. And if you still want to sleep in a tent from time to time, then the AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress can do that too.

      PROS:

      • Super comfortable sleep system, just like home.
      • More compact mattress.
      • Products are built tough with durable fabrics and construction.
      • Removable topper and pillow cases so that they can be washed.
      • Upcycled products to eliminate waste.
      • Adjustability of the Head Support Bridge System to get just the right fit.

      CONS:

      • Pump makes a loud screeching sound when in use.
      • Memory foam topper doesn’t split in half if you only use one of the two mattresses (but you can just double it up, although another strap would help secure it better).
      • Spendy.
