Want a break from the Olympics? Check out the Sandboarding World Cup

Social media streams and most screens around town are heavily covering the Olympic Games right now. I mean, it’s an infrequent and international sporting event involving pretty much every country in the world. Fair enough. 

But, in the midst of all the Olympic fever, I’ve somehow managed to stumble onto a much smaller event that’s been going on for years, and have —admittedly — been more compelled to watch footage of it over the ‘Big O-Games’. 

So, in spirit of a little anti-Olympic fandom, how about we take 5 minutes to head into Peru for the Sandboarding World Cup? Massive sand dunes at least 120 metres high become the features for the competition’s Slalom, Boarder Cross and Big Air events. The Peruvian Cup has been around since 2007, and The World Cup has been running since 2017 thanks to InterSands (International Sandboarding and Sandski Association).
