In the latest Avalanche Conditions Report Video, Dave, who is part of the Snow Safety Team at Whitewater Ski resort explains why the snowpack is currently still very touchy. Recent heavy snowfall and some moisture mixed in has created a widespread natural avalanche cycle. The top of the snowpack consists of recent storm snow which is sitting on top of the Dec 26th layer which is a 2-4cm thick crust. A lot of avalanches are failing on this crust which is a reactive bed surface but they are also still reacting down 60-90cm on the Dec 17 surface hoar layer as well. The Nov 17 surface hoar layer is now down over 100cm and there is a crust below this as well. Results are still triggering deep in the snowpack especially in shallow rocky start zones so there is a lot to be concerned with.

Be cautious out there if you venture out and remember this is a situation of "low probability with high consequences".
