Rossland Range conditions update Jan. 31, 2011

Did a couple tours over the weekend near Rossland, BC -  one on Record Ridge/Mt. Roberts and another in the north end of the Rossland Range. The east face of Record was surprisingly good, with boot-deep power and nice turns for the top half and crust/powder lower where warmer temps and sun from earlier in the week resulted in a thaw/freeze cycle. Tree bombs had to be avoided as they set up rock hard, but open zones were still pretty fine. DL's on Record was variable, with some soft snow but firm where people previously skied.

The northern Rossland Range was a bit of a surprise. On the way up the east and south faces conditions were similar to Record albeit a bit less snow at and above treeline due to wind distribution. We skied an true north aspect and it ranged from hard, wind packed snow to shallow powder over firm snow. Snow stability was bomber and we could't get anything to move save minor sluff. The wind really did a number and I suspect most north faces are pretty firm right now. However, as mentioned the stability was excellent, which allowed us to get into some really steep terrain we typically avoid in all but the most stable of conditions. Now's a good time to go check out that cooler or steep face you've been dreaming of but wouldn't dare get near with the generally touchy conditions this year. Lower down the snow got better all the way to the car. The best skiing seems to be 1500m and lower. Not much snow and cool temps should keep things consistent for the week…but of course snow assessment is always warranted. Let's hope the forecasted snow next weekend sets up the right mix for some steep pow possibilities. Didn't take any skiing shots but I did nab a few "scenic" pics. I also shot some vid so hopefully will get another edit up in the coming week or two.
