PHOTO COMP Icefall Lodge - Western Rockies. Jan 29 - Feb 5 2011

Icefall Lodge is located North of Golden. The lodge sits at 1900m with 200 Sq Km of accessible terrain reaching elevations up to up to 3000m. Our group consisted of 18 people including a cook – Kelly Mager of Backcountry Bistro, who is an awesome cook and person! The original hut was built about 5 years ago and is pretty small and rustic.

Day 2, Jan 30 came in clear and sunny! We planned to head straight to the Alpine! We knew we had to be cautious since the avi forcasts were talking of a 1m think faceted layer 1 meter down. We didn’t find this on our pit the previous day but we dug our pit at 2200m. We headed out but planned to be cautious.

With our track already set to Mt. Kemmel we went back to get as high as we could to hit up Icebox. We also wanted to ski Ice Pass and back up and over Orbit and Alien but opted to ski pow on the SE ridge instead. Gotta ski pow when there is pow available!

Duncan and Nick joined us again. It took 2 hours to get to the bottom of the SE Ridge and another 3 to get to the top of Icebox. Mostly since we were taken by the views, and didn’t want to fall into a crevace or over a cornice.

Another Alpine destination at Icefall Lodge is Mt. La Clytte. At 2900 meters the summit may not be the destination but the NE facing slopes should be! As well it gains access to the South West side of La Clytte and the GROOVE TUBE. which unfortunately suffered from sun on this day. The initial climb up the La Clytte glacier after we dropped down from Keffi pass was steep and getting warm. -4 C at 12:00pm, compared to yesterday’s temperatures of -20. Great birthday ski for wifey
