Ace Camp Flame Sticks
A company most backcountry skiers have likely never heard of is AceCamp. They have a growing list of products from underwear to headwear and everything in between including hiking poles, lights, tents and emergency supplies. We had a look at a few of their products listed below and wanted to let you know our thoughts. First thing you notice is the prices, super inexpensive. Naturally you assume quality suffers to allow for these inexpensive costs however overall I was surprised that this was indeed not the case with AceCamp. Case in point, the multitool. It was pretty sturdy and could do everything you would hope, same goes for the folding knife at only $6.95. All of the products did not disappoint however the compass being a little more technical was one product I would be hesitant to risk my safety on due to its tolerances, but for $8.95 it's a good entry level product to get familiar with.
The stand out product was easily the new AceCamp Flame Stick. I have been searching for a fire starter that provided the following features:
- non-flint based
- provides a long burn time
- waterproof
- produces little smoke or fumes when burnt
The AceCamp Flame Sticks fit the bill on all of these points. They are also the right shape, long and narrow so that the flame is away from your hand. Since they are able to generate over 360 degrees of heat they can be used to start a fire easily or give you a burst of emergency heat. The AceCamp Flame Sticks also provide adequate light in an emergency and they have a burn time of 6 – 8 minutes. A box of 20 weighs only 40 grams and would provide over 100 minutes of burn time, and they'll only run you $5.95.
