    • Cold Smoke Voodoo Splitboard

    Cold Smoke Voodoo Splitboard

Cold Smoke is a small splitboard manufacturer from Gunnison Colorado and the Voodoo is their flagship board. The Voodoo has taken home the Editors’ Choice award from Backcounty Magazine twice. Each splitboard that comes from the Colorado factory is hand made with both craft and care. All boards receive a stone grind finish before they are released into the wild, and the factory wax is environmentally friendly to lessen the impact on those wild places we all love to play in.

Rocker, camber flat, early rise.... an ideal combo.

The Voodoo is a directional board designed with big, steep lines in mind, but is equally as much fun in tight trees. This board is fast, flexible, and agile in any conditions, and holds an edge like it was getting paid to do it. Each year they continue make minor improvements to this board, and it seems the juice is worth the squeeze as this years’ model is one sweet ride.

    Coldsmoke Voodoo Splitboard

This year's board has an enhanced early-rise rocker and extra width in the nose to make floating through pow easier, going up or down. They also lessened the rise in the tail in order to increase grip when going up-hill.

Aggressive camber behind the back foot maximizes pop when riding, and increases traction for the skin up. This ‘camber bubble’ is a Cold Smoke specialty and really does make this board more reactive and playful.

    Coldsmoke Voodoo Splitboard

The Voodoo features a poplar wood core which offers strength but remains light and reactive underfoot. In the 158 and 163 lengths, the board features carbon stringers which increase stiffness in the ride. The 154 does not have these stringers as it’s designed for a lighter rider who won’t exert as much force on the board, hence not requiring further stiffening.

The side walls are made from polyethylene which means they remain flexible while being super strong and resistant to impact. When compared to some other materials, polyethylene’s response time is less effected by cold temperatures.

A solid black sintered base is “the toughest/strongest and longest lasting base you can buy”. Keeping it simple avoids unnecessary weak points sometimes created when embedding graphics into the base. This base is the fastest on the market and absorbs wax well to keep the board fast and fresh.

Though it is one of the toughest boards on the market, the folks down at Cold Smoke didn’t trade weight for durability. Combine that with the unique hybrid camber and this board is almost as much fun to slide up the hill as it is to slide down it. Almost…

    Verdict:

I really enjoyed riding the Cold Smoke Voodoo Splitboard. I rode the 163 length, but it handles much smaller. It was quick and responsive, poppy, and playful. Stomping cliff drops and buttering through powder was a dream with this board, and it even feels solid tearing up groomers on the way back to the chair from a slackcountry lap. I can’t say enough good things about this board, and I totally understand how it received the Editors’ Choice award on more than one occasion.

    PROS:

    • Handles small for its size
    • Fun and capable in all terrain and conditions

    CONS:

    • Directional shape makes riding switch more difficult
