That's a pretty early objective to be skiing in the rockies. You might get some snow, you might not. You best bet is to try and get high. Unless we get some serious snow in the next 2 weeks I would not even consider any of the tours through the trees. You need a good base to cover up the deadfall before having any fun becomes realistic. People have been out to the highest elevation locations on Hwy 93N and to Highwood Pass on Highway 40. There is months of great touring at each location... if you have the snow. Both areas are around an hour from banff. There are links to each area on this site.

I have no idea why anyone would bring telemark equipment on a ski trip?

All you need for ski touring is skins. In terms of boot packing up early season couloirs... I personally would wait for them to fill in a whole lot more, but that's just me.

..and a box of band-aids, it'll be an 'exciting' day if you fall. Be prepared for short days and lots of hiking. You won't see anyone out there.

I second the Icefields Parkway, the 93N. Be very cautious with a <front wheel drive> rental car (sans snow tires) I've seen lots of people up there North of Bow Summit in rentals without a chance.

~45kms north of Lake Louise has some early season classics. Bow Summit area.. or as far as the Saskatchewan river crossing. Weather is very different there then within the 'East West Bow Valley' . Lonely highway this time of year.

Kananaskis has some big objectives although will be a serious walk in. You're just on the wrong side of the Rockies.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like my best chance to ski is to hope Sunshine Village will be making snow. The resort webcams do show some natural snow now at the higher elevations.
I read on this forum that this area is in Banff National Park and uphill skiing is allowed. I'll call the resort next week and decide if I bring AT gear.
will resorts open earlier if a big storm hits?

i'm not sure that Sunshine will open in October at least it hasn't the last 5 years. Your best bet is for Nakiska opening early but as far as I know everyone is slated for November. As said before, Kcountry and Highway 93 N are the two popular options. Good luck!

I'm hoping they'll be making snow ASAP to prep for opening day in early Nov. I don't need grooming and can sneak on early or late in the day.
i will hike in the areas you recommended to check out ski routes. Thx
