Helly Hansen Odin Pro Shield Jacket — Gear News

Finding a single layer that seamlessly handles the high-output demands of ski touring without leaving you chilled or clammy is an ongoing backcountry puzzle. Enter the Helly Hansen Odin Pro Shield Jacket—a purpose-built hybrid engineered to bridge the gap between a traditional softshell and a highly technical fleece. Built with a robust 4-way stretch fabric, this minimalist garment maximizes mobility and temperature regulation during heavy aerobic ascents in sub-freezing environments.

The standout feature of the Odin Pro Shield is its intelligent fabric composition. A durable, PFC-free DWR treated exterior sheds light snow flurries with ease, while the highly compressible design ensures it slips effortlessly into a rescue pack. It also features a fully integrated RECCO Advanced Rescue system for added peace of mind, alongside harness-compatible pockets and an articulating hood.

While initially promoted as a winter hybrid or technical mid-layer, our testing has proven its true value spans far beyond the peak of winter. It makes for an exceptional transitional piece for spring ski touring, and its impressive versatility means it will easily find its way into a summer day pack for navigating unpredictable weather days hiking high in the Canadian Rockies. This jacket is truly built to handle the peaks.

New Spring Apparel - Norrona Falketind

Falketind is Norrøna’s highly versatile, year-round technical apparel collection, built for everything from mountaineering to trekking and hiking. The lineup covers all the essentials—waterproof jackets, durable pants, midlayers, base layers, down insulation, and both short- and long-sleeve tops—designed to perform across a wide range of conditions.

Originally introduced in 2006, the Falketind line has been continuously refined, with each new iteration becoming lighter, more packable, and higher performing. The collection takes its name from Falketind, a 2,068-meter (6,785-foot) peak in Norway’s Jotunheimen range, notable as the site of the country’s first alpine ascent in 1820.

Let’s dive into this Falketind review, where we’ll take a closer look at the Dri1 Jacket, Thermo40 Zip Hood, and Flex1 Pants.

Outdoor Research Women’s Shadow Wind Hoodie

A breathable, lightweight, wind-resistant layer like OR’s Women’s Shadow Wind Hoodie is an essential piece in my wardrobe year-round. I’ve relied on this type of layer for spring ski traverses, backpacking trips, and summer and fall day hikes. While it’s designed for alpine environments, it’s also a favourite for travel—it packs down small and takes the edge off a chill.

Built to handle gusty ridge tops, the hoodie offers light water resistance for passing precipitation and stretches with your movement, making it ideal for active pursuits. The stowaway hood tucks neatly into the collar when not in use. One of my favourite features is that the entire jacket packs into its zippered chest pocket, making it exceptionally compact and easy to carry.

The Shadow Wind Hoodie feels great against the skin, and its bluesign-approved materials ensure the fabrics are free from harmful substances, support worker safety, and use resources responsibly. A feminine cut is thoughtfully articulated for a flattering fit. With its balance of price, practicality, and style, OR has truly delivered a standout piece.

ROLL Recovery has released a new line of SUPERPLUSH footwear, which includes shoes, slides, and now flip-flops. This SUPERPLUSH collection is designed to be exceptionally comfortable and enhance recovery. Each pair features a multi-density foam footbed that incorporates BLOOM foam technology, using algae instead of harsh chemicals.

We’ve already tested Roll Recovery's slides and shoes and have been enjoying the new flip-flops on a recent warm-weather vacation and around the house as inside shoes. Like the ROLL Recovery shoes and slides, these flip-flops offer reliable stability and support, thanks to the Orthofit™ design that provides both arch and midfoot comfort.
Smith replacement lenses revive your shades

I’ve been a long-time user of Smith Optics, and my go-to shades are the classic Guide’s Choice and my new winter touring favourites, the Embark Sunglasses. Both models feature Smith’s ChromaPop™ Glass Polarchromic lenses, which combine advanced polarization with UV-sensitive, self-tinting technology that adapts to shifting light. This versatility allows you to use a single lens on both sunny and cloudy days, or when moving from open ridges into dense forests. It effectively eliminates the need to swap lenses every time the weather or environment changes.

Sustainability Meets Savings
After wearing my Guide’s Choice sunglasses regularly for over six years, the lenses began showing signs of wear from dirt, grime, sweat, and sunscreen chemicals. Even with diligent care—meaning no wiping them on a dusty cotton shirt—lenses eventually degrade. However, the frames remain as solid as the day I bought them.

I was thrilled to see that Smith now offers a wide range of replacement lenses for their most popular models. Rather than shelling out $375 for a brand-new pair of Guide’s Choice, I can spend between $100 and $170 for replacement glass. While the Guide’s Choice is currently limited to standard ChromaPop options, the Embark offers the full range of Photochromic lenses. Saving over $275 is a welcome relief for my wallet, and more importantly, it prevents perfectly good frames from ending up in a landfill.

Future-Proofing Your Gear
Having just acquired the Smith Embark this year, I shouldn’t need replacements for a while—unless, of course, I drop them one too many times. To hedge my bets, I ordered replacement lenses for both the Guide’s Choice and the Embark just to be safe.

I opted for the non-photochromic ChromaPop lenses for their standout definition, clarity, and the natural vision I’ve come to expect from Smith. These replacements also provide a great secondary option for the Embark frames, allowing me to switch from Photochromic to standard ChromaPop depending on the specific demands of the adventure at hand.

SPECS
Smith Embark Sunglass Replacement Lens
Lenses: $100CAN ($170 Photochromic) / $88US ($105 Photochromic)
Colours: ChromaPop Glacier Photochromic Copper Blue Mirror, ChromaPop Polarized Green Mirror, ChromaPop Blue Mirror, ChromaPop Black

Smith Guide's Choice Sunglass Replacement Lens
Price: $100CAN / $88US
Lenses: ChromaPop Polarized Grey Green, ChromaPop Polarized Blue Mirror, ChromaPop Polarized Brown

This is a total "no-brainer." Saving two-thirds the cost of a new pair of sunglasses is a huge win, and keeping quality frames out of the trash simply makes sense. Smith’s replacement lenses are an affordable way to breathe new life into well-loved (or carelessly handled) eyewear. I’m glad to see this service offered, and I’m sure Smith owners everywhere will jump at the chance to refresh their favourite shades.

The Ignik Gas Growler 3.8 Deluxe - saves money and the environment

Ignik’s first product was the Gas Growler Deluxe, introduced shortly after Graeme Esarey founded the company in 2018. His goal was to create more sustainable products and eliminate single-use propane canisters. Ignik soon expanded the lineup with 10 lb and 3.8 lb versions. Each size offers an ideal refillable propane solution for outdoor cooking and heating needs. Complete with a tank, rugged carry case, and adapter hose, these systems eliminate the waste, hassle, and bulk associated with small disposable canisters and oversized tanks—making them a smart investment for campers, overlanders, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Switching to the Ignik Gas Growler 3.8 Deluxe from traditional disposable propane canisters provides both convenience and sustainability. There’s no more anxiety about running out of wasteful, single-use green canisters, and no need to wrestle with an unwieldy 20 lb tank. The 3.8 Deluxe strikes an ideal balance: it offers enough capacity for extended trips and multi-burner cooking, while remaining compact and easy to stow in any vehicle or camp setup. The soft padded case protects the Growler during transport and accommodates the included hose, both of which come standard in the Deluxe version.

Although the upfront cost of the Ignik Gas Growler 3.8 Deluxe is higher than that of several disposable canisters, it quickly pays for itself while significantly reducing landfill waste. Each refill saves money and helps eliminate the growing environmental impact of discarded bottles. Built from durable steel and designed for years of use, the Growler 3.8 Deluxe is a reliable addition to any camping kit and a more eco-conscious choice for long-term savings. For anyone serious about enjoying the outdoors without the guilt or inconvenience of single-use canisters, the Ignik Gas Growler 3.8 Deluxe is an excellent alternative.

Features:

More economical and less wasteful than single-use, 16-ounce "green" propane bottles.
More portable than traditional 20-lb tanks.
Provides 3.8X the fuel of one single-use bottle at 1/4 the price.
Super compact and highly portable for camping, overlanding, RVing, boating, and tailgating.
	DOT-approved, 12-year valve certification.
	1% for The Planet.
Pre-purged and ready to be filled.

This allows for two-way communication without carrying your phone to stay connected and safe on your adventures. While there are some connectivity limitations—and it helps if you are already invested in the Garmin ecosystem—the watch offers a wealth of functionality from your wrist that was not previously possible with Garmin. The big question is whether the new Fenix 8 Pro can replace a dedicated handheld satellite communication device, or if you still need to carry one as well.

Elevate Your Winter Protection: BlackStrap Merino Hood Balaclava and Tube Review

For those who venture deep into the backcountry, headwear is more than a simple accessory—it is a vital tool for thermal regulation and protection against the elements. Whether you are grinding out a steep skin track in the Selkirks or bracing against a ridgeline gale, the BlackStrap Merino Hood Balaclava and Merino Tube Neck Gaiter provide a technical edge through innovative fabric engineering.

The secret to these pieces lies in Nuyarn technology. Unlike traditional merino wool, Nuyarn is drafted around a performance core, resulting in a fabric that is significantly stronger, stretchier, and dries five times faster than standard wool. This is a game-changer for high-output activities like ski touring, as it prevents your breath from freezing into a solid plate of ice over your face.

The Merino Hood Balaclava further stands out with its patented ExoHinge design. This dual-layered system allows the face panel to move independently, letting you pull the mask down for a drink or better airflow without shifting your hat or goggles. Meanwhile, the Merino Tube offers a minimalist, odor-resistant solution perfect for multi-day hut trips. Both pieces feature UPF 50+ sun protection and a seamless fit, ensuring you stay comfortable from the first ascent to the final descent. If you are looking to upgrade your winter kit with gear that works as hard as you do, the BlackStrap Merino series is worth a close look.

The Best Backcountry Skiing Hard Shells of 2026: New Review Categories

Navigating a high-alpine storm requires more than just "waterproof" fabric; it requires a shell that can manage extreme internal moisture while blocking external onslaughts. For the 2026 season, our team spent over 120 days in the skin track—from the humid, heavy snow of the Coast Mountains to the bone-chilling winds of the Rockies—to find the hard shells that truly deliver.

We’ve updated our review format to help you find the perfect match for your specific skiing style. We now categorize our top picks into three distinct groups: Overall for the one-jacket quiver, Technical for high-output alpinists, and Freeride for those who live for deep powder and charging through the trees.

This year’s testing pushed the latest PFAS-free GORE-TEX ePE membranes and proprietary fabrics to their limits. Whether you are looking for the "bombproof" protection of the Arc'teryx Rush, the exceptional breathability of the Norrøna Lyngen, or the sustainable, freeride-focused design of the Ortovox Ravine, our comprehensive 2026 guide breaks down the pros, cons, and technical specs of the best shells on the market. Don’t head into the backcountry without knowing which barrier will actually keep you dry when the weather turns nasty.
To help you cut through the marketing noise, we have officially changed the format of our Backcountry Hard Shell Reviews. We’ve moved away from a "one size fits all" list and instead categorized the industry’s top gear into three distinct styles:

Best Overall (The Quiver-of-One): These are the workhorses. Built with rugged materials like GORE-TEX Pro, these shells balance durability, weatherproofing, and breathability. They are designed for the skier who wants one reliable jacket for every day of the season.

Best Technical (The Ascent Specialist): For the gram-counters and high-alpine explorers. These shells prioritize maximum breathability and packability. They feature athletic cuts and harness-compatible designs for those who measure their success in vertical meters.

Best Freeride (The Powder Charger): Style meets substance. These jackets offer a more relaxed fit and longer hemlines to keep the snow out during deep descents. They are built tough to withstand the occasional branch while providing the protection needed for big mountain lines.

Our team has put these shells through over 120 days of rigorous field testing to ensure our ratings for Fit, Protection, and Quality are more accurate than ever. Check out the full 2026 guide here to see which category fits your skiing style.

MEC Icefields Down Hooded Jacket Review

The MEC Icefields Down Hooded Jacket has undergone a complete transformation, evolving from the heavy parka of yesteryear into a high-performance alpine workhorse. Designed specifically for the fast-and-light backcountry user, this total overhaul prioritizes technical efficiency, warmth, and packability.

The most notable upgrade is the shift to 850-fill power RDS-certified goose down, providing an exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio. MEC has also ditched traditional stitching in favor of woven, seamless baffles. This innovative design eliminates thousands of needle holes, significantly reducing down leakage and preventing wind from whistling through the seams. To combat the moisture often encountered during high-output touring, the jacket features hybrid mapping with synthetic EcoSoft insulation in high-exposure zones like the chin guard and cuffs.

Weighing in at just 358g (Men’s), the Icefields is built to live under a shell or stand alone during transitions. While the lightweight face fabric requires a bit of care around sharp gear, the inclusion of a RECCO reflector and an internal drop pocket for skins makes it a highly functional tool for the mountains. Whether you are deep in a ski tour or transitioning at a windy col, the new Icefields offers premium performance at an accessible price point.

Click the link below to see the full breakdown of how this jacket performed in the field and why it earned a 9/10 rating.

Gore-Tex: Which version is best?

As the leader in waterproof protection, GORE-TEX offers a line of durably waterproof, totally windproof, and reliably breathable outerwear technologies that meet the demands of winter conditions and activities. Do you know the different versions found across the winter garments?

GORE-TEX PRO
The most rugged GORE-TEX technology, GORE-TEX PRO, is made for extreme conditions and the most demanding activities. Rigorously tested - from simulated downpours in the rain room to field trials with athletes - its abrasion-resistant and snag-proof 3-layered system features a tough outer fabric treated with DWR, the innovative ePE membrane, and a durable inner backer. All working together to provide breathability, elite-level waterproof and windproof protection, and confidence in unforgiving conditions. Serving as the go-to gear component of choice for winter athletes and mountain professionals.

GORE-TEX Performance 3L
The GORE-TEX Performance 3-layer is designed for individuals seeking versatility without sacrificing the waterproof and windproof protection, durability, and breathability GORE-TEX is known for. Its bonded 3-layer construction - a durable outer fabric, waterproof and windproof ePE membrane, and inner backer - works as a single system, resulting in a garment that moves naturally with the body and is ideal for dynamic winter pursuits like freeriding, hiking, and mountaineering.

GORE-TEX Performance 2L
Completing the GORE-TEX outerwear lineup is the GORE-TEX Performance 2-Layer Insulated system built for everyday comfort and versatility. It features a durable DWR treated abrasion-resistant outer fabric bonded to a waterproof and windproof ePE membrane, along with a layer of insulation, and an inner liner suspended freely between the membrane and body. Keeping you warm and protected for daily winter wear in lower-intensity conditions year after year.

Warmth at its lightest: Outdoor Research SuperStrand LT Hoodie

The Women's SuperStrand LT Hoodie by Outdoor Research is a versatile, multi-season insulation layer. Designed for travelling light, it’s well-suited to backcountry pursuits such as ski touring, climbing, and hiking.

Its construction is simple and no-fuss— you won’t find pull cords for cinching, extra pockets, or unnecessary zippers, since embellishments only add weight and bulk. What you do get are the essentials: zippered hand pockets and elasticized cuffs and hem. I honestly can’t remember the last time I used a hem cinch cord on a jacket, so I appreciate this minimal approach. I’m also a fan of jackets that stash easily, and the SuperStrand LT Hoodie stuffs neatly into its left pocket for convenient packing.

The 100% polyester VerticalX™ SuperStrand insulation that keeps you warm is sandwiched between layers of ultralight ripstop nylon, held in place with an understated stitch pattern. Synthetic insulation has the edge over down because it continues to insulate even when damp — a big plus for backcountry skiing or camping. The slightly shiny ripstop exterior has a slick, non-pilling finish that feels pleasingly smooth to the touch. Would it get sticky if you wore it over just a T-shirt while active? Probably — but that’s when you take it off, right? In most situations, I prefer a hooded jacket to one without, since it saves me packing a beanie and keeps me warm when a cool wind picks up. I’ve found the insulation plenty warm for my preference, both on and off the skin track.

The Women's SuperStrand LT Hoodie is one of those layering pieces you can use in the mountains year-round or wear downtown on cooler spring and fall days. I’m a big fan of multi-purpose, multi-season gear — it’s less to store in the off-season and offers great value for money. In terms of fit and look, the hoodie has a flattering, feminine, and low-profile silhouette.

For this season, they have revamped the Kilos into the Kilo XTRs which offer a 120 flex rating while adding only 190 g per boot. This increased stiffness delivers a more confident, powerful descent without sacrificing cuff rotation or uphill efficiency.
