Pierra Creta Europe's southern ski mountaineering race

Dear friends,
I would like to introduce you to the Pierra Creta Ski Mountaineering Race. Europe’s Southern ski mountaineering race.

Pierra Creta is a ski mountaineering race held in the mountains of Crete. It was organized for first time in March 2014, and in 2015 as a team race with great success. After two successful consecutive editions, “Pierra Creta” is a bi-annual event!

We are a group of people living in Crete, Greece and the idea to set up such an event on the Cretan mountains, came to us with beers at hand. The fact that our island is mainly a mountainous rocky terrain and a spontaneous wordplay with the “Pierra Menta”, gave us a name… And the name was “Pierra Creta” (Creta is the Latin name of Crete). During the early stages of our thoughts about the event, we used this name and eventually became hard to give up on it. We loved it so much and it was so fun telling the others about it, that it became the official name of our event. Please, do not get us wrong but, it is not and never was in our intention to compare with the Pierra Menta (how could we?) and we hope that this is obvious. It is a source of inspiration and a role model to us.

Our effort is to enjoy skimo as much as we can, and along with friends from all over the world, to promote ski mountaineering in our country and inspire more people to engage with it. Our event is aligned with the above aim and it pursuits to make ski mountaineering, known to people of Crete and to show to people abroad that Crete is a place for it.

We are expecting you all during the first weekend of March 2017 (4th and 5th) for another Pierra Creta experience!

For more info and registration form please follow this link to our website (www.pierracreta.gr/en).

Regular updates not only for the race, but also for the skimo camps, snow quality, and other events will be posted on all of our social media platforms:

The Search For Freedom

The Nelson, BC premier of "The Search for Freedom" gave a nearly full house a great perspective on life, freedom and happiness. From the point of view of extreme athletes; Tony Hawk, Kelly Slater, Shane McConkey, Jeremy Jones, to name a few, to future prodigies like Tom Schaar & Logan LaPlante everyone had the same message; do what you love & be happy. Weather you are into skiing, snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding, biking, climbing, motorcycling or skydiving, this movie has it all. Thoughts from Warren Miller & Bruce Brown touch on the evolution of these sports and the movies that document them with amazing cinematography and thoughtful narration. I think this movie will bring chills to anyone with a passion for the outdoors.

And what better place to host a movie premier than Nelson? With many of the movie's contributors being residents of the area, it was no surprise the turnout was so large (adding an extra screening afterwards). There is even a shot of our local ski resort! But Nelson is a special place where most residents have come in search of their own freedom & happiness. I give this movie five stars and would watch it again and again. It is truly an inspirational documentary.

Deep Winter's 9th year arrived in a dry sunny stretch of weather, not exactly 'deep winter' in Whistler. Despite the low snow pack and icy conditions, Ashley Barker stepped up to win 'Queen of Storms'.
Given 72 hours, contestants must shoot and prepare a 5 minute slideshow presented live to a sold out crowd of judges and mountain folks. Tal Roberts took 2nd place, with Mike Helfrich in 3rd. Congrats Ashley!

5th Annual Vancouver Island Backcountry Festival

Here we go again!
For those who don't know, the Vancouver Island Backcountry Fest is a gathering of the backcountry community in a place as difficult to get to as it is special. Those that make the pilgrimage will find the usual epic gear raffle, fantastic people, excellent touring, as well as by donation guided tours and an outdoor dance party. All proceeds go directly to the Vancouver Island Avalanche Centre Society, which is used directly to fund the avalanche forecasting for Vancouver Island. If you want to come you'll have to find your way to the northern tip of Vancouver Island, rally up a sketchy logging road, and camp in the snow (or in your vehicle).

If that sounds good to you, then you will fit in

Tailgate Alaska is pleased to announce the Tailgate Alaska X Dupraz Ski Design Contest where entries will design the next graphic for the award winning Dupraz D2 skis.

Introduced in 2012, the Dupraz D2 immediately set the European ski world on fire, winning the ISPO 2012 Product of the Year with its radical shape and deep carving capability. According to ISPO jury member Alfredo Tradati, “The D2 ski can be used on piste and on powder, and obtain different performance in powder or when you cross the slopes.”

The top three graphics, according to online votes, will move onto a final, on January 26th, 2014, where a panel of Tailgate Alaska and Dupraz staff members will decide which graphic to produce.

On January 29th, we will announce the winner of the Tailgate Alaska X Dupraz Ski Design Contest. The winner of the contest will get one of the limited edition boards and a ticket to Tailgate Alaska.
