La Rédemption, Quebec

Great little backcountry spot near Rimouski, Quebec. It's just by a small village called La Rédemption, and the hill is called Montagne Saint Pierre. There are PDFs online at https://lesgrimpeursdelest.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/montagne-st-pierre-cartes-ski.pdf and at a few other websites with all the info.
I found out about this place from locals at the Gaspesie National Park. It's a great hill with four gladed tree runs setup. They range from the real mellow to nice and steep powder in the trees. It's about a 1 hour skin from the road to your first line and then about 40 minute laps. Cool little place and no crowds.

Drop in at the Municipal town hall and let them know what you think. Super friendly townfolk! They are looking for funding to develop the sport in the area.

Does anybody have experience touring in the Monts Groulx mountains? I've met a few people on my travels that have recommended this place for a multiday / camping style ski tour.
Looking at maps it looks like an interesting spot. I found a bit of info on the web such as this video; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CV5HW6Bq-0 and blog from a friend of mine; https://westofthespine.wordpress.com/2014/03/31/trip-diary-uapishka-mountains-les-monts-groulx/ .
These guys went in March, but does anyone have experience early season like in December? Looking at the previous weather, it's been below 0c for the whole of november and I expect that it has snowed there too. Just not sure if there will be a enough base to go exploring early season!

Hello Again,

At it once again in Hamilton, after my last day at the hills of Chedoke I was eager to find another spot to try out. This area is 5 minute drive from my house, it's the East end of the Rail Trail. At the bottom of the escarpment runs the tracks for freight trains. A short walk along the pathway trails break off up the hill into some interesting terrain.

As you can see there is a lot of thick brush with fallen trees and exposed rocks. I spent an afternoon hiking with my camera getting a feel for some spots that would be worth checking out after the next significant snowfall. After picking out a few lines to try out all I needed was some fresh powder. Fortunately I didn't have to wait too long as we had a nice dumping the following week.

Exposed rock surrounded by small trees

Trail markings

Above: looking up the hill/Below: A shot from the top

The fresh snow held really well to existing base and was able to take advantage of some of tight turns and natural features. It took some maneuvering to avoid some of the downed trees but the overall experience was really good.
I was able to video document the afternoon and compiled the videos to the music of my favorite local Hamilton band "The Reason"
http://youtu.be/7tt4srbjwvQ
doesn`t look like I`ll have a chance to explore anything else in the city this season as the snow is all but gone. I plan to do some hiking in the off season looking potential spots to tour next year.

Till next time,

ski poaching..........Soap Box

Seeking powder is part of winter. There is no hope at my ski hill for real snow. The only way i can do so, is by having trails cleared in the woods. Some close to the ski hills, others, on totally deserted peeks. Out East, people have been cleaning trails during the fall for ages. When you explore the woods near a ski hill, you will find previous attempts to have the ultimate spot. It makes for a good physical training before winter.
Some of you may think it is not worth it, but believe me, some days, it is the best powder on earth! We only have dry powder during the cold months, and you may find yourself in front of a virgin trail with a meter of new snow that hasn't been skied all winter. Sounds too good to be true? It's not! You have to follow certain rules. After 10 years of ski poaching out East, here are my golden rules:

1.	Never divulge your spot to a Ski patroller or a ski store clerk!
(if you do, you can be sure you will not see virgin powder for the whole winter. It will become tracked out faster then you can say 'powderwhore')

2. Never post your trail entrance position on internet
(thank you captain obvious!!)

3.	Never flag the entrance of a trail
(if you do, it as to be done indirectly and not obvious)

4.	Do not overski a trail
(let the snow rest for a least a week if you want a virgin track everytime. You need more than one trail)

5.	Never flag or brag about someone else's trail
(they worked hard to clear it, so you have to respect their commitment. Lots of my trails are now useless because of people that flagged the entrance)

6.	Do not use gaz or electric tools to clean the trail
(best way to get in trouble and for other people to spot you. A portable handsaw is all you need)

7.	Always wear a ski helmet to shred
(it saved my melon lots of times with all the tree limbs flying in my face)

8.	Enter your trail when it snows or when it's windy
(best way for the tracks to disappear and hide the entrance)

9.	Always go down where you skinned
(that way, no fallen trees will surprise you)

10.	Always wait for the first ice crust of the season to start skiing the woods
(if you don't, you will have roots and bent down trees hiding)

11.	Enter your trail like a hunting Sioux
(this is perhaps the best trick i can give you. Going directly to the entrance is a dead giveway. You might as well put a entrance sign. Go in a Zig Zag through difficult terrain)

12.	Don't clear the first 50-100 feets of trail
(it makes it a lot harder for others to find the entrance)

Not only will you learn the art of following the best lines but also you will use every terrain feature to your advantage. Fallen trees are jumps. You only have to clear the limbs. Boulders become jumps as well. Creeks become trails easily. I have seen more wildlife while clearing the trails than any other time. I've seen wolfs, deers, and moose. A great powder stash is like a good fishing spot, as soon as everyone knows were it is, it's over.

Be safe, and enjoy the wild wild snow of ski poaching!

Since I am new to the the backcountry forum I just wanna say a quick hello to the eastern section and an envious one to the rest . I've decided to make my first post a tribute to where I learned how to ski when I was a young lad.
Chedoke Golf Course in Hamilton had a running ski hill for many years. Sadly it closed in 2003 due to a lack of ability to make money caused by the unpredictable Southern Ontario weather. The below picture is an editorial cartoon I found online about the situation.

Just a short drive within the city, I thought it was a good place to test the powder (we had an unusual amount of snow this year). To access the old hills you have to walk just a few minutes down the rail trail, pretty sure one of the runs ran over top of it because you have to pass through a steel formed tunnel. It was good hike up the hill as it has a decent vertical drop. As you can see it`s quite over grown though I wouldnt know as I was too young to ski the large hills.

We were able to do a couple of runs before the sun began to set and left me eager to find some other spots in the city to explore.
I put together a very short video of a couple of clips we were able capture.

Episode 3.2 rewinds back to a few of our mid-winter 2013 splitboarding missions. With a solid snowpack in place, we dug deeper into spots that had previously left us broken and battered. From posting up in a remote cabin to pre and post workday missions, we’ve been burning the headlamps at both ends to take full advantage of the best conditions the east coast has seen all winter. Boot up checkyourpins.com for photos and more, and stay tuned for the Chic Chocs in episode three.

Here is a montage of my backcountry skiing during january 2013... eastern and western canada (gaspesie and whistler-blackcomb) me and my crew 7skiers and 1 snowboarder we stayed in a chalet in gaspesie QC for 3 days of backcountry. It was amazing a real ski in ski out but in the wilderness hehe... then I took a plane with my brother and we went to Blackcomb in a hotel for 7 days (5 ski days). Due to a lack of fresh snow we discovered the HUGE backcountry that whistler has to offer and we made a couple runs at oboe and cowboys ridge (outside of flute bowl) I rode the 4frnt hoji at whistler .. amazing ski I like to compare it to the k2 pontoons (I own a pair :D). And here it is ! Enjoy xD
