Jumbo Pass -- anybody ski up there?

Hello. I was up at Jumbo Pass (in BC) this past weekend and was blown away by the terrain. Has anybody skied up there? If yes, is the best access from the Invermere side? It was amazing to stand between the east and west Kootenays.

        The Cauldron/Horseshoe glaciers, I believe.

Ya, we did AST2 up there last season. Don't which is the BEST access but we sledded in from Pano to the summer trailhead just SE of the hut. Rode off both sides of the saddle, mainly in the trees as conditions were a little sketchy after a big dump just before we arrived. Laugh

Finished off with a sweet line off the summit of the adjacent peak - Jumbo Mt?.. Awesome views, great little hut, good times..

Hey! Thanks Chip. It's as I assumed. It seemed to me like access from the west would be pretty tricky. Skiing off the summit of Jumbo must have been pretty EXTREME. The size of the terrain up there made me think of Rogers Pass + All this talk is building my stoke-o-rator.

I think Chip is speaking of a peak due south of Jumbo pass, don't know the name of it but it is prime ski touring terrain (on the map below it is referenced as Bastile Mountain). Jumbo mountain is actually across the valley and heavily glaciated so it would be an epic climb and a more epic ski. Is that the peak you think you skied Chip?

Here is a vid I found of some of teh terrain, not great cinematography but you get the idea.

Ah yes, it's all coming back to me now.. NOT Jumbo Peak.. not south either, North.. Directly above the hut.. Nothing extreme, we rode a very mellow, safe but sweet line down the ridge, the RH 'horizon' of the peak looking from the hut.

Would post a pic or 2 but I can't get the pic browser to work..

Glad to read that someone else shares my sense of direction (or lack thereof)Smile I know what you are talking about now Chip. Looked like there were some super nice lines off there. Did you check out the help section regarding posting pics? It's here. Take a look and if you have any probs., you can PM me. It's a little tricky but once you figure it out, it's pretty smooth. And we want to see your pics.

Hay Crystaline; some years ago six intrepid skiers sledded up Glacier Cr. to camp on the road at the Northfork blowout. We daytripped from there using one sled to tow the crew around. As in the video  we found the snow dry but thin. (January). Our best lines were in the Big Hemloc forest of the Northfork. No hazards but hard to stay together. We climed to the top of the southfork via the big morraine. This is a classic. Skiing back we opted to stay to the East of the basin so as to avoid very steep slope at the bottem.  RKHeliskiing maintains a very nice cabin below Eagle Spire its not open to the public but could be used in an emergency. The trip in required crossing several avalanche paths one of which was epic. We found the best attack was for one person to use the chainsaw to cut through big snow blocks and everyone else build a trail. This took hours. We had to belay the sleds down to the road once on top. Great fun. Monica meadows is easily accessed. Go past the summer parking lot by about 2km. Where the road crosses the creek flowing from the meadow, turn north (up). Stay to climbers right of the creek and follow the edge of the trees once you see open above you. For more info contact me at 352 5666.

We have reserved the Jumbo pass cabin for a few days from the 28th of Jan. Do you know how far one can go by car this year? Is it to Toby Creek / Jumbo creek junction or futher in? We are hesitating if we should skin all the way from the car or if we need to be towed in by snowmobile, it seems to be around 20km. Is the road normally frequented by snowmobiles so we can count on a track for the first 15km? Is it possible to park at the road side

        /Stefan

        Hi Falemo,

our group of 8 skinned to Jumbo Pass hut on Dec 31th 2011. As of Jan 3th you could drive a 2WD car ( always good to carry chains in the trunk just in case) on Toby ck Rd 19-20 km past the Panorama resort turnoff. From there you park and start skinning onto Jumbo Ck FSR. You should get ahold of RK Heliskiing for a current update of the plowing status.  Many parties that go to Jumbo hut sled in so your group may be lucky enough to have a sled track to follow. With 45-55lbs packs it took us 9.5hrs total to get there (about 20km total). We had to break trail in boot top ski pen for about 4hrs to get from summer trailhead to the cabin. You should bring at least one camping stove / pots and sleeping pad + bivy sac in case you don't make it to the hut in 1 day.

The coleman propane stove does have a slow leak so you should unscrew the propane bottle after each meal.

Let me know if you have other questions.
